Football prevues - Nov. 4

The second round of the football playoffs are Monday night and two Metro ballclubs are still alive on the Road to the Dome.

Xavier (9-1) hosts league foe Iowa City High (8-2) at Saints Field and Kennedy (7-3) travels to Davenport to face Assumption (9-1) for the first time.

City High was a beaten down opponent before it took the field last year in a first-round game at Xavier. The injury-plagued Little Hawks were playing out the string in a rare losing season and were trampled by the Saints 48-10.

The Little Hawks are much better this season and could pose a huge problem for Xavier, especially if the Saints are unable to corral a special runner with a familiar name.

Xavier Washpun has rushed for 1,775 yards and 19 touchdowns for City High this season. Stopping him will be a priority for a Saints defense that has been outstanding against the run.

Kennedy, meanwhile, will have to figure out how to contain Assumption dual-threat quarterback Jake Gervase, who has run for nearly 900 yards and passed for a little more than that amount.

The best defense against Gervase is an offense that keeps the ball away from the Knights, and Kennedy's ground-and-pound attack appears suited to do that.

The game shapes up as a slugfest.

Monday's winners play again on Friday in the quarterfinals. If both locals win they would meet at Xavier.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
