Brune named Washington baseball coach

Scott Brune has been named the new baseball coach at Cedar Rapids Washington, pending school board approval, Athletic Director Paul James announced Tuesday. He will begin his duties once approved.

Brune replaces Tony Lombardi, who served two years as coach. Brune is the 10th head coach in the 57-year history of Warrior baseball. Past Warrior coaches include Emil Klumpar, Don Shupe, Clark McCleary, Pinky Primrose, Rick Netolicky, Randy Mathews, Byron Schlotterbach, Brent Henry and Lombardi.

Brune is a 2002 graduate of Dubuque Wahlert High School. He received a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Iowa and became a four-year letterwinner. Brune has coached baseball at West Liberty and served two years in the Washington baseball program, one as head sophomore coach and one as the varsity assistant coach.

“Coach Brune will provide stability and sound leadership for the Washington baseball program," James said. "He is a great fit and a coach the baseball players will play hard for and respect because of his knowledge and coaching style.”

Coach Brune will continue as a teacher and freshmen men’s basketball coach at Washington.
