J-Hawks establish Cole Johansen scholarship

A new college scholarship is being established at Jefferson High School in honor of Cole Johansen, a former counselor, teacher and coach at the school.

"This scholarship will be awarded to a senior boys basketball player who shows outstanding dedication to team concepts and academic learning that Mr. Johansen has exemplified in his life," Jefferson boys basketball coach Stu Ordman announced Thursday.

There will be a ceremony to officially introduce the scholarship on Friday, Feb. 7 at Jefferson between games of a varsity doubleheader against Kennedy.

Johansen worked as a golf coach and assistant basketball coach at Jefferson. "He was beloved by students, players and fellow coaches," said Ordman.

Ordman said Johansen is too ill to attend the ceremony, but hopes he will be able to view it online. Ordman hopes Johansen's wife, Trudy, will be able to attend.

Ordman invites Johansen's relatives, friends, colleagues, former players and students to send Johansen a video message after the ceremony.
