8 Cougars will play college sports

Eight Kennedy seniors were honored Thursday at the school for signing national letters-of-intent with their future colleges.

Miles Moa, Seth Gilmore and Triston Christopher all plan to join the powerful football program at Iowa Western Community College, which won a national title in 2012. Drake Zabloudil, a fourth member of the Kennedy football program, will play at Southwest Minnesota State.

Madi Meier will play basketball at Upper Iowa, Kaela Dickerman will play soccer at Louisville, Derek Jacobus will run track at the University of Northern Iowa and Alyssa Averhoff will run at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Moa rushed for 1,498 yards and 11 touchdowns last season and helped the Cougars (8-4) reach the third round of the Class 4A playoffs. Gilmore is a 6-foot-3, 295 pound lineman, Zabloudil is a 6-6, 265-pound lineman and Christopher made 83 tackles on defense.

Meier, a 5-foot-9 guard, is averaging 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds for the Kennedy girls basketball team (14-4). Dickerman collected 16 goals and eight assists for the girls soccer team last season as a junior.

Averhoff placed eighth in the 3000 meter run at the Class 4A state track meet last May and finished 10th in the state cross country meet this past fall.
