Jasmine Blue wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson sophomore Jasmine Blue is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Blue is one of the top sprinters in the state and a member of the Cedar Rapids Jefferson track team that set an all-time state record in the 4x200 relay at the Class 4A state meet last year.

She won four gold medals at the 28th Annual J-Hawk Relays on Saturday, April 5 when she captured the 100 meter dash and ran on the triumphant 4x100, 4x200 and sprint medley relays. The J-Hawks set meet records in all three of those relays that day.

Blue helped Jefferson win the same four events at the Kennedy Invitational Saturday at Kingston Stadium as the J-Hawks won the team championship.

Blue qualified for the state meet in the 100 meter dash last year as a freshman, but did not reach the finals. She also helped the J-Hawks place third in the sprint medley as well as set the all-time mark of 1:40.94 in the 4x200 relay, snapping a record set in 1975 by Woodbine.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Jasmine Blue:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

JASMINE: My favorite individual highlight in sports would have to be running in the Drake Relays last year as a freshman. It was just such an eye-opening and overall great experience. It really taught me how to strive for excellence at such a young age.

MSR: What has been your favorite team highlight in sports?

JASMINE: My favorite team highlight in sports was winning the 4x200 relay at the state track meet last year. Breaking the all-time best record was definitely something I will never forget. Ever.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

JASMINE: My future goals regarding sports are to attend a great college that can better my education, future and athleticism through my gift.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

JASMINE: Coach Calloway has definitely had the biggest impact on my sports career thus far. He is such a wise and encouraging man who always knows what is best for the team. I honestly do not know where I would be without him. He is always steering my teammates and I in the right direction, no matter what.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

JASMINE: My favorite classes in school are any classes that focus on language arts. I am currently active in my school's yearbook staff and I thoroughlyenjoy it!

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

JASMINE: My favorite community service project would have to be helping the local Girl Scout community better their business with the young adult mind. It was fun getting to share fresh new ideas with people in need of help.
