Lions settle for 2nd at state tennis

Linn-Mar senior Brady Anderson's bid for a piece of state tennis history fell a set short Saturday.

Anderson and Trevor McCann lost to David DiLeo and Karl Wenzel in the championship match of the Class 2A state doubles tournament, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center.

Anderson won the Class 2A state singles title in 2013 and was bidding to become the first player in 16 years to capture a state singles title and doubles title in his career. Hunter Skogman of Linn-Mar was the last player to turn the trick, claiming a doubles crown in 1997 and a singles title in 1998.

Players have to pick their event for the postseason tournament - either singles or doubles - and Anderson wanted to chase a doubles title this year with McCann, his teammate and good friend.

"It's what I wanted to do," Anderson said before the finals. "If we win, it's going to feel great. But even if we don't win, I think it was the right choice."

As it turned out, the Lions were able to defeat one Iowa City West doubles team in the tournament but not the other.

Anderson and McCann outlasted Adam Dellos and Trent Schneider of Iowa City West, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the semifinals in a mild upset. Dellos and Schneider were the No. 1 seed in the tournament while Anderson/McCann were seeded No. 4, but the Lions defeated Dellos and Schneider during the regular season and were confident they could do it again.

"It was a good match," said McCann. "We played them early in the year and it was a battle, so we knew coming in it would be a tough match."

It took Anderson and McCann three sets and about two hours to beat Dellos and Schneider in the semifinals on a hot, sunny day. Meanwhile, DiLeo and Wenzel had a much easier time in the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Cedar Falls in the semifinals.

Anderson and McCann did not appear as crisp in the finals as they did in the semifinals, but they did not want to use fatigue as a possible excuse.

"During the season we made it a goal to be conditioned," McCann said before the finals. "Any time it was rainy or we couldn't get on the courts, we always were inside running and stuff. So I don't think conditioning will be a factor for us."

Anderson and McCann were seeded No. 4 in the tournament and wound up finishing second, just one victory shy of their goal. Anderson, a senior who grew three inches since last season to 6-foot-2, and McCann, a junior, formed a formidable pair on the court.

Anderson plans to continue his tennis career at Coe College next season. McCann will be back for his final year at Linn-Mar.

Freshman Alex Brown of Waukee defeated senior Blake Oetting of Iowa City West, 6-2, 6-4, for the Class 2A singles title. Charlie Humes of Pleasant Valley topped Jiung Jung of Iowa City West, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 for third place.

Dellos and Schneider of Iowa City West defeated Brennan Ashwood and Vineel Mallavarapa of Cedar Falls, 6-3, 6-3, for third place in doubles.
