Wash denied by Trojans in double OT

DES MOINES - Gunnar Lenzen sat by himself on the Cedar Rapids Washington bench, his arms covering his head and face, trying to hide the misery and pain.

The Washington goal-keeper had just played a sensational game, with save after incredible save, but in the end it wasn't enough.

Wadood Daoud scored for Iowa City West on an unstoppable header in double-overtime as the third-ranked Trojans denied the fifth-ranked Warriors, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A state soccer tournament at Cownie Park.

The Warriors might have lost 5-0 instead of 1-0 with a mere human in goal, but Lenzen's super-human efforts gave his club a chance to pull of an upset and reach the finals.

In the end, the Trojans simply had too many good chances and were bound to connect sooner or later. It took more than 90 minutes, but it finally happened.

Lenzen dealt with his emotions on the bench while his teammates, equally distraught, lay scattered in the grass.

"It's disappointment," Lenzen said softly, barely above a whisper. "We were so close to that ultimate goal. It sucks to have it end like that."

Iowa City West, the two-time defending champs, dominated the match and fired 23 shots in Lenzen's direction, including 11 on goal. By contrast, the Warriors managed only two shots on goal against the Trojans.

Lenzen stopped all of them until Alex Bode lofted a pass in front of the goal and Daoud knocked it in with his noggin.

"It all happened too fast," said Lenzen.

The talented junior appeared to be beating himself up for the one that got away, but if so he was being incredibly hard on himself.

"He played a hell of a game," said Washington Coach J.P. Graham. "He put himself in position to make great saves."

The Warriors (15-5) will face Linn-Mar (18-4) in the dreaded consolation game for third place Saturday at 4:10 p.m. Iowa City West (20-1) will meet Johnston (21-0) in the finals at 5 p.m.

Washington trimmed Sioux City West in a PK Shootout Thursday that required 100 minutes of hard-nosed soccer, then the Warriors battled Iowa City West for more than 90 minutes Friday.

The game-winning goal came 48 seconds into the second overtime.

"Our guys played as hard as they could after playing 100 minutes last night, and then to ask them to go against these guys (the Trojans) with all their depth," said Graham. "We're just a little more worn down. We didn't have much left in the tank."

At times, it looked like the Warriors were content to play defense the entire day and perhaps get the game into another PK Shootout with a scoreless tie, but Graham said that was not the case.

"No, not at all," he insisted. "We were trying to score. We just couldn't get many possessions.

"Our forwards, we didn't get a whole lot out of them. They're pretty tired, also."

Washington and Linn-Mar were hoping to meet in the finals. Instead, they'll battle for third place.

"We'll get a good night's rest," said Graham. "Third-place games are always tough, because both teams are on this emotional roller-coaster and it's kind of all about who comes out and wants that game."
