No. 3 Cougars roll to 4A quarters

Dalles Jacobus treasures each opportunity he gets to take the field for the Kennedy football team.

The unquestioned emotional leader for the Cougars, Jacobus and his teammates have been on a mission from the opening day of practice. The "family" mantra has been well-publicized this year.

Also well-known is the way the Cougars approach each game.

"It's fun," the senior lineman said. "You get your guy, drive him off the ball and let (Tyler) Dralle do what he does."

Kennedy did just that Monday night at Kingston Stadium. With Jacobus and the rest of the line and receivers leading the way. Dralle rushed unofficially for 142 yards on 28 carries, scoring four touchdowns as the No. 3 Cougars moved to 11-0 with an impressive 49-7 win over North Scott in a second-round Class 4A playoff game.

The Cougars will play Washington in the quarterfinals on Friday night. North Scott, which lost a 42-0 decision to Kennedy on Sept. 11, finished 5-6.

"Our offensive line is the heart and sole of this team," Kennedy coach Brian White said. "They take so much pride in what they do and it isn't just the linemen. Our tight ends and receivers really buy into blocking and it shows."

Dralle continued to move up the Metro record rushing list. He has an unofficial total of 1,816 yards this season, moving him to fourth all-time, just 45 yards behind former Linn-Mar standout Jer Garman's total of 1,861 in 2009.

Ironically, White was working on limiting Dralle's carries because of the condensed playoff schedule.

"I went in thinking I wanted to limit his carries," White said. "I wanted to give it to this guy and give it to that guy, but in the end you have to go what is working.

"Dralle just wants the ball," continued the Kennedy coach. "So, I am going to give him the ball. With just a three-day turnaround coming up, he's going to have to get into that ice bath right away tonight."

North Scott had some big plays to start the game, which wasn't a surprise to the Cougars' head coach.

"We knew they were going to come out fighting and we expected them to do so," White said. "They had a good drive going and we were able to stop them, then turn on the offense."

It took Kennedy just seven plays to score. A 37-yard Nick Duehr to Shaun Beyer pass was the key play in the drive. capped by Dralle on a 7-yard run.

North Scott fumbled on its next drive and Todd Gusta fell on it for Kennedy. Six plays later, Dralle went in from the 5 to make it 14-0.

A short Lancer punt gave Kennedy a short field on its next possession. The Cougars went 40 yards on 12 plays. Dralle went in from the 3 on the sixth play of the second quarter to put Kennedy up 21-0.

The Lancers responded with their only score on their next drive, capping it with a 3-yard run from Kiel Brown.

"I never noticed any panic among the kids," White said. "They knew we were going to move the ball and at no point were they ever worried, even after they scored."

Kennedy responded with an 11-play drive to score before the half. Duehr hit Beyer with a 22-yard scoring pass in the final 90 seconds to give Kennedy a 28-7 halftime lead.

Neither team scored in the third quarter but the Cougars scored three times in the final 12 minutes, including Dralle's fourth TD, to finish off the scoring.

White did turn to some other backs in an effort to lighten Dralle's load. Fullback Zach DeMaris had five carries for 59 yards and a score. Beyer lugged it 11 times for 68 yards and hauled in four passes for 72 yards.

"We've got a lot games in a short period of time," said Jacobus, who got three carries as part of the Cougars' power package. "We've got to keep everybody healthy. We can't be giving Dralle the ball 50 times three times in a little over a week.

"This is what we have worked for since August," Jacobus continued. "The seniors have wanted this since we were freshmen and the juniors bought in from the start. We just want to keep it going."
