Woods promoted to New York-Penn League

It took Nate Woods only 20 games to earn his first promotion in the minor leagues.

Woods, 22, has been promoted to the Jamestown (N.Y.) Jammers in the New York-Penn League after spending his first month in pro baseball in the Rookie Gulf Coast League in Florida.

The New York-Penn League is a Short Season Class A League with 14 teams in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, Maryland, Vermont and Connecticut.

Woods hit .347 with two homers, 10 doubles, one triple and 14 RBIs for the Florida Marlins' team in the Gulf Coast League. He was informed Sunday night that he'd been promoted and headed to New York on Monday.

Woods starred at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids (Class of 2007) and enjoyed a productive career at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., where he set school slugging records and helped the Bruins reach the NCAA Division I tournament for the first time in school history this year.

Woods, 6-foot-6, 230, signed with the Florida Marlins as a free agent in June and was assigned to their GCL team in Jupiter, Fla. He demonstrated his versatility in the Gulf Coast League by playing third base, first base and designated hitter.

Woods had a busy day Monday after learning of his promotion. He went to the Marlins' ballpark in Jupiter at 4:30 a.m. to collect his gear, then rushed to the airport for a 6 a.m. flight to begin his journey to upstate New York.

The Jamestown Jammers have a 17-13 record heading into Monday night's game against Mahoning Valley and are tied for first place in their division. Woods has been added to their active roster and is eligible to play in Monday night's game.

The Jammers play at Russell Diethrick Park in Jamestown, a stadium that can hold 4,200 fans.

Woods compiled a .460 on-base percentage and a .597 slugging percentage in the Gulf Coast League.
