Xavier High School principal Tom Keating announced Thursday afternoon that Steve Lueck has resigned as the school's activities director after less than six months on the job.

Keating did not give a reason for Lueck's sudden departure.

"We thank Mr. Lueck for his service to Xavier and wish him well,"  Keating said in a terse press release. "A search for a new activities  director will begin immediately."

Keating declined to shed any light on the situation during a telephone interview with the Metro Sports Report.

"He wants to do something else," said Keating. "He submitted his resignation and we'll move forward to find his replacement."

Keating declined to share Lueck's reason for leaving. "I don't want to speculate on that or share his feelings," he said.

Lueck could not be reached for comment.

Lueck succeeded Mike Winker as the school's activities director on July 1 and had been on the job for less than six months.

Winker had served as the activities director at Xavier ever since the school opened in 1998. Winker entered private business and also is an  instructor at the University of Iowa.

Keating said Winker will not be serving as the school's interim  athletic director, but Keating said he has talked to Winker to get  advice about running the department.

"His flexibility in his current position at Iowa allows him to give us  a little bit of help," said Keating. "It's good to have his expertise."

Keating served as the athletic director at Dubuque Wahlert during his career and knows the Mississippi Valley Conference. He plans to help run the department for the time being.

"We're trying to cover as best we can," he said.

Keating said it could be difficult to find a new activities director for the 2016-17 school year, because many of the top candidates are under contract at their current schools.

Lueck was the principal and athletic director at Storm Lake St. Mary's High School before moving to Xavier. He worked at Storm Lake St.  Mary's for three years.

Lueck is a native of Dyersville and a graduate of Dyersville High School.
