Sarah Abu-Nameh makes state tennis

WATERLOO - Sarah Abu-Nameh of Xavier finished second at the Class 1A regional tennis tournament in Waterloo Thursday and qualified for the  state meet in Iowa City on June 1-3.

Abu-Nameh won three straight matches at the regional tournament, including a pair of upsets over seeded players.

Abu-Nameh topped No. 3 seed Franny Roche of Waterloo Columbus, 6-3,  6-7, 7-6 in the second round. She knocked off No. 2 seed Annika Koppes  of Iowa Falls, 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Abu-Nameh lost to No. 1 seed Olivia Fain of Waterloo Columbus, 6-0,  6-1, in the championship round. The winner and runner-up both advance  to the state tournament at the Hawkeye Tennis Center at the University of Iowa.

The Xavier doubles team of Nina Marquardt and Emily Jasper finished  third at the regional tournament. They won their first two matches before losing to the No. 1 seeds from Waterloo Columbus in the  semifinals.

Marquardt and Jasper defeated the No. 3 seeds from Dike-New Hartford  in the consolation match for third, 6-2, 6-4.

Camryn McPherson of Xavier finished fourth in singles competition with  a 2-2 record.
