Mustangs win 3 twinbills in row

The Mount Mercy softball team put an exclamation point on an excellent week Saturday by sweeping Missouri Valley, 5-3 and 7-2, in a Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.

The Mustangs won all three of their doubleheaders during the week by sweeping William Penn on Tuesday, Clarke on Wednesday and Missouri Valley on Saturday.

Mount Mercy raised its records to 17-7 overall and 10-2 in the league, tied for first place with Grand View in the North Division of the Heart of America Conference.

Tawny Menster raised her record to 7-0 in the 5-3 victory in the opener by pitching six strong innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Jayna Witzany collected two strikeouts in relief in the seventh inning for a save.

 

Jolona Shield, Michelle Mack and Morgan Braughton had two hits for the Mustangs in the opener. Mack had two stolen bases.

Madelyn Irwin (5-1) pitched a complete game for the Mustangs in the 7-2 verdict in the nightcap, allowing two runs on six hits. Shield was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, making her 5-for-6 with three RBIs in the doubleheader. Jessica Miller was also 3-for-3. Payton Bruner and Jess Heick scored twice.

Missouri Valley fell to 10-15 overall and 3-9 in the conference.
