Lombardi mulls Washington baseball job

Cedar Rapids Washington football coach Tony Lombardi has expressed interest in possibly becoming the school's next head baseball coach as well.

Brent Henry served as Washington's interim baseball coach this past season after Byron Schlotterback asked for a leave of absence and ultimately resigned.

Lombardi has coached baseball at Washington High School at the sub-varsity level. He played baseball in high school, but ended up playing football at Arizona State University.

"I've enjoyed baseball. I've been around it," Lombardi said Monday.

"If I was the right fit, and people here thought it was a good thing, I would try to assess if it's good for everyone involved. My family, me, the school," he said.

"I want this (the baseball program) to be successful, so I don't want to be the wrong guy, that's for sure."

Lombardi said he has asked Washington administrators what they're looking for in a head coach. He said he realizes serving as the head football coach and head baseball coach could be demanding.

"I don't even know if it's humanly possible to do both," he said. "There's no doubt it would be quite an undertaking."

Lombardi thinks he might be able to steer some football players into the baseball program if he were coaching both sports. Also, he'd be able to coordinate summer workouts for the two sports.

Henry has expressed interest in becoming the head coach on a permanent basis. Henry led the Warriors to a 16-22 record after becoming the interim coach on short notice. He also had to deal with Dakota Freese, his top pitcher, splitting time between Washington and a travel team in Chicago.
