PREP PREVUES - Fri., Oct. 21

No. 3 Linn-Mar (6-0, 8-0) at Xavier (4-2, 5-3)

Site: Saints Field

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: WMT (AM-600), KMRY (AM-1450, FM-93.1)

Storyline - Linn-Mar already has won a conference championship and clinched a playoff berth, so what's left to play for? How about an unbeaten regular season and No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

The latter is what the Lions will achieve with a win. Xavier also has clinched a playoff berth. The Saints are playing for pride. Their three losses were to teams ranked in the top 10 and this is their fourth - and probably most formidable - foe. The Saints will play of the road in the first round of the playoffs, irregardless of tonight's result. The game also highlights a pair of potential 1,000-yard rushers. Linn-Mar's Mitch Wantock has 992 yards and Xavier's Carter Valentine 971.

Linn-Mar - The Lions ran their record to 25-5 over the past three seasons with their 17-12 win over Iowa City High last Friday. The Lions beat the Little Hawks for the first time since 1994 and clinched the MVC Mississippi Division title. Linn-Mar set school records with 514 yards rushing and 656 total yards against Wahlert on Sept. 9. The Lions have outscored their first eight foes 329-86 and have outgained foes by more than 200 yards per game (430.6 to 216.1). They lead the MVC in total offense, total defense and scoring defense (10.8 points per game). Senior QB Mark Atwater has completed 64 percent of his passes, thrown for 20 TDs and run for seven TDs. His favorite target is senior Andy Henry, who has 14 TD receptions and returned a kickoff and punt for TDs. Mitch Wantock is second in the Metro in rushing with 992 yards. Top players: QB/LB Mark Atwater, sr. (78-510, 7 TDs rushing; 78-122-3-1347, 20 TDs passing; 34 tackles); RB/LB Mitch Wantock, sr. (107-992, 9 TDs rushing); LB Tommy Feller, sr. (66 tackles, 8 for loss); WR/KR Andy Henry, sr. (35-749, 14 TDs receiving); TE Jacob Hutchins, sr. (12-166 receiving); WR/DB Zach Martins, sr. (11-184, 3 TDs receiving; 28 tackles, 3 int.); C/DT Dustin Smith, sr. (30 tackles, 3 for loss); LB John Conner, sr. (43 tackles); PK Quinn Treiber, sr. (42-43 PATs, 3-3 FGs).

Xavier - The Saints have won twice since a brutal stretch of the schedule produced a three-game losing streak. Those losses were to ranked foes Iowa City High (52-24), Cedar Falls (27-7) and Iowa City West (49-19). The Saints shutout their first three foes (Kennedy, Prairie, Hempstead) and also beat Waterloo East (19-13) and Jefferson (37-10). On offense, senior Carter Valentine has six 100-yard games and ran for a season-best 232 against East two weeks ago. Valentine is third in the Metro in rushing with 971 yards. He played less than a half last week against Jefferson because of a balky ankle, but is expected to play tonight. Top players: RB Carter Valentine, sr. (176-971, 8 TDs rushing); QB Reggie Schulte, jr. (81-130-9-1087, 9 TDs passing); WR Jordan Hoffman, sr. (12-222, 3 TDs); WR Corbin Woods, jr. (29-359, 4 TDs receiving); TE/DE Kevin Hosch, sr. (9-104, 1 TD receiving; 23 tackles, 3 for loss); FB Matt Hansen, sr. (48-196, 4 TDs rushing); RB Nick Ball, sr. (20-178, 0 TD rushing); WR/DB Jordan Weber, sr. (12-322 receiving; 36 tackles, 6 for loss); LB Craig Murtha, jr. (38 tackles, 4 for loss); PK Josh Steffensmeier, sr. (6-6 PATs, 1-2 FGs).

Wahlert (3-2, 5-3) at Kennedy (3-2, 4-4)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600)

Storyline - Both teams have qualified for the playoffs, but the winner here ends up tied for second place with Iowa City High in the MVC Mississippi Division. A Kennedy win probably earns the Cougars a No. 11 seed and a playoff date with Pleasant Valley. A loss and the Cougars are likely the No. 14 seed and playing at Bettendorf.

Wahlert - The Golden Eagles' three losses are to Linn-Mar (54-22), Cedar Falls (55-21) and Iowa City High (27-10). The latter game was the only time Wahlert was held to fewer than 20 points. The Golden Eagles own a 31-10 win over Washington at Kingston Stadium and beat Waterloo East last Friday. QB Riley McCarron is an outstanding all-around athlete. He passed for 277 yards and ran for 45 against Linn-Mar. WR Brady Williams is his favorite target. Sam Koenig is a strong back, linebacker and kicker. Top players: QB/DB Riley McCarron, sr. (91-158-8-1558, 17 TDs passing; 90-684, 5 TDs rushing; 41 tackles, 5 int.); RB/PK Sam Koenig, sr. (144-770, 3 TDs rushing; 22-23 PATs, 8-11 FGs, long 50; 64 tackles, 6 for loss); WR Brady Williams, sr. (33-705, 10 TDs receiving); WR John Burgmeier, jr. (19-311, 3 TDs receiving); WR Josh Tranel, (16-144, 1 TD receiving); LB Sawyer Theisen, sr. (88 tackles, 6 for loss).

Kennedy - The Cougars have won four of their last six games after switching to a Stack-I offense that has pounded out the ground yardage. Kennedy whipped winless Waterloo West 42-19 last week, but played sluggishly. QB Chico Lizarraga passed for a career-best 336 yards against Iowa City West two weeks ago in a 35-28 loss. Junior Josh Hillyer has taken over as tailback and has run for 618 yards the last six games after netting 11 in the first two. Senior Trevor Heitland was moved from tailback to flanker, but still gets considerable carries out of the Stack-I. He ran for 110 yards and also had 94 receiving yards against Waterloo West. Top players: RB Trevor Heitland, sr. (103-551, 10 TDs rushing; 23-457, 4 TDs receiving); WR/DB Josh Jahlas, sr. (6-62, 1 TD rushing; 19-421, 3 TDs receiving; 103 tackles); RB Alex Hillyer, jr. (146-629, 9 TDs rushing; 15-208 receiving); QB Chico Lizarraga, sr. (71-133-3-1211, 7 TDs passing); S Andrew Johnson, jr. (48 tackles); LB Prince Kollie, soph. (38 tackles); DE Logan LeTellier, sr. (82 tackles, 8 for loss); LB David Hynek, jr. (64 tackles); LB Riley Fergus, jr. (63 tackles); DE Tommy Kaiser, jr. (37 tackles); PK Jordan Holzer, sr. (21-25 PATs).

Prairie (2-4, 2-6) at No. 9 Iowa City High (4-2, 6-2)

Site: Bates Field, Iowa City

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - Prairie needs to beat Iowa City High and have Pleasant Valley beat Clinton to nab the final berth in the Class 4A playoffs. The Hawks have won their last two games, beating Jefferson and Hempstead. City High is coming off a 17-12 loss at No. 3 Linn-Mar that was the Little Hawks' second loss in three games.

Prairie - The Hawks may get starting quarterback Jace Hanna back fr this game. He sat out last week's win because of a slight concussion suffered against Jefferson. Sophomore Dylan Kuchemann stepped in for Hanna and completed 4 of 10 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. The Hawks also got a big boost with the return of Demetrious Harper, whose 88-yard kickoff return with less than 2 minutes remaining provided the winn score against Hempstead. Harper had been sidelined since Sept. 2, when he broke his collarbone against Xavier. Prairie's six losses were to opponents with a combined 36-12 record and none have a losing record. Top players: WR Demetrious Harper, jr. (12-134, 2 TDs rushing; 6-127, 1 TD receiving); RB Zach Witte, sr. (57-248, 1 TD rushing); QB Jace Hanna, sr. (62-128-6-954, 5 TDs passing; 48-(-12) rushing); QB Peyton Wagner, jr. (9-18-0-160, 3 TDs passing; 30-139, 2 TDs rushing; 8-104 receiving); WR/LB Jarred Edmonds, jr. (16-360, 6 TDs receiving; 1-46 rushing; 59 tackles); WR/DB Braedon Carlson, sr. (20-204, 2 TDs rushing; 12-103 receiving; 3 int.); PK/LB Austin Reutzel, sr. (18-19 PATs, 4-4 FGs; 39 tackles); RB/LB Cam Rathje, jr. (39-169, 2 TDs rushing; 59 tackles); DB Bryce Alberts, sr. (66 tackles).

Iowa City High - The Little Hawks have lost two of their last three games after winning 33 straight games against MVC foes. City High is outscoring its opponents by an average 34 to 16. The Little Hawks also are averaging 387 yards on offense and allowing around 268 on defense. Most of City High's offensive yards have come from senior tailback Ronald Thompson, who has run for 1,565 yards, an average of 195.6 per game. Thompson's lowest ouput this season was 69 yards against Linn-Mar. His high game was 362 in Week 3 against Iowa City West. The Little Hawks don't pass, and it hurt them in their losses to Washington and Linn-Mar. They have but 349 passing yards all season. They also don't punt often. Top players: RB Ronald Thompson, sr. (191-1,565, 17 TDs rushing); QB/DB Jasper Washington, sr. (84-520, 6 TDs rushing; 16-43-1-335, 5 TDs passing; 31 tackles, 1 int.); FB/DT Amos Lavela, jr. (46-373, 4 TDs rushing; 45 tackles); WR/DB Jeremy Johnson, sr. (11-239, 4 TDs receiving; 22 tackles); LB John Law, sr. (51 tackles, 7 for loss); TE/DE Steve Ferentz, sr. (2-31, 1 TD receiving; 29 tackles); PK Drew Cornwell, so. (34-34 PATs, 9-12 FGs).

Jefferson (0-5, 0-8) at Hempstead (0-5, 2-6)

Site: Chalmers Field, University of Dubuque

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - This is the last chance for Jefferson's seniors to win a game in their varsity careers. Hempstead also is playing for pride after being eliminated from the playoffs last week in a 35-28 loss at Prairie.

Jefferson - The J-Hawks have lost 21 straight games, the longest current losing streak in Class 4A. Their last win was against Dubuque Senior, 20-13, on Sept. 25, 2009. The J-Hawks have the worst offense in the MVC, averaging only 217 yards and 9.1 points per game. They scored a season-high 17 points against Prairie two weeks ago and they have been held to 10 or fewer points six times. They have been outscored 306-73 and have been particularly susceptible to the run. The J-Hawks have allowed 1,985 yards rushing, an average 248 per game. The J-Hawks moved QB Alex Baxter to RB,  but he reinjured right knee against Prairie and is out. Top players: RB Austin Short, sr. (80-262 rushing); RB Kyle Mann, sr. (37-203, 2 TDs rushing); C Ryan Eivins, sr.; WR/CB Christian Knox, sr. (29-317, 1 TD receiving); FB/LB Tanner Lund, sr. (5-51 receiving; 24 tackles); TE Austin Goodell, sr. (73-354, 3 TDs rushing); WR Alex Smith, sr. (32-387, 5 TDs receiving); WR/S Connor Ehlers, sr. (18-186, 1 TD receiving; 52 tackles, 2 int.); LB Ben Wilgenbusch, sr.
