Too much Hill for Warriors to climb

Barkley Hill was unstoppable when it counted Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

Hill scored five touchdowns on runs of 14, 1, 19, 33 and 50 yards and gained 231 yards to power No. 6 Cedar Falls past Washington, 35-32, in a Class 4A playoff football quarterfinal.

Four of Hill's touchdown came in the second half, after the Warriors had built a 17-7 lead on Ryan Cain's 91-yard kickoff return to open the third quarter.

The most amazing run was the 19-yard pinball job that cut the Warriors' lead to 24-21 with 1 minute left in the third quarter. It started a 21-point Cedar Falls onslaught that was aided by a pair of Washington turnovers.

Hill was bottled up and appeared to be tackled three times, including a head-rattling blow delivered by Washington's Paul Nash. But the Cedar Falls senior stayed on his feet, cut across the field and raced 19 yards to paydirt.

"That changed the game right there," Washington Coach Tony Lombardi said. "He kind of beat us mentally on that play."

"That's just him," Cedar Falls co-Coach Brad Remmert said of Hill. "That's the way he works. He's not going to give up. These seniors want to move on and he knew that. He played with an extra spring the third and the fourth quarter."

Hill also scored the next time he touched the ball, following an interception return by teammate Jake Gallu to the Warrior 33. Hill ripped through a tackle attempt by the Warriors' Mitch Blades at the 19 on that carry.

"His legs don't stop churning," Washington defensive back Flynn Heald said of Hill. "He's one of those guys that it's just hard to bring down. If you don't get him on initial contact and wrap him up and pull him down, he'll make you pay for it."

The 33-yard touchdown put Cedar Falls ahead to stay, 28-24, with 11:06 left in the game.

The coup de grace was delivered on Cedar Falls' next possession. The Tigers got the ball at the Washington 48 after recovering a Warrior fumble. The Warriors caught Hill for a 2-yard loss on first down, but on third-and-12 from the 50, Hill took a pitch, picked up a block from receiver James Harrington and went 50 yards for his final touchdown. It gave Cedar Falls a 35-24 led with 8:37 left.

"When he bounced it outside, we'd force him back in, but we wouldn't wrap him up and he just kept driving on the play," Cain said. "His legs kept going. That's probably why he's going to play at Iowa State next year."

Hill, a solid 6-foot, 210 pounds, committed to the Cyclones last April. He has the pedigree to play Division I football. He was named the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division Athlete of the Year earlier this week and now has rushed for 2,427 yards and 40 touchdowns - this season. A three-year starter, Hill has rushed for 6,061 yards and 89 touchdowns in his career.

"(The records) don't mean nothing if we don't get this title," Hill said. "This title is what we've been going for since we were sophomores."

Hill seemed to get stronger as the game wore on. He had 53 yards at halftime and 178 in the second half.

"I don't know if it's getting stronger or if people just get tired," Hill said. "We like to run the football, because it wears defenses down. Late in the game the defense is tired, so it's a good time to run the ball."

Hill also saw time on the defensive side at linebacker, and he punted six times for a 36.7 yard average, including a wedge shot that went out of bounds on the Washington 3. He also made a leaping grab of a high snap and got off a kick with the Tigers clinging to a 35-32 lead and about 3 minutes left in the game. Instead of Washington having the ball in possible field goal position, the Warriors had to start at their own 26. They turned the ball over on downs and Cedar Falls ran out the clock.

Cedar Falls (11-1) will play Bettendorf (11-1) in the semifinals next Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the UNI-Dome. Bettendorf whipped Iowa City West, 45-13, Friday night.
