Warriors 7th at boys state swim meet

MARSHALLTOWN -- Based on times from the district meets, Washington Coach Chris Cruise said he felt his team could finish anywhere from second to the seventh at Saturday's boys state swimming meet at the Marshalltown YMCA.

Unfortunately for Cruise and the Warriors, seventh place it was.

Muscatine won two relays and three individual events and the Muskies repeated as state champions.

Muscatine rolled up 177.5 points to easily beat second-place West Des Moines Dowling, which finished with 135.

Washington finished seventh with 115 points. The Warriors did not win any events.

The pre-meet power rankings had the Warriors at number six, just below district runner-up Dubuque Senior.

Senior jumped ahead of Washington by finishing fourth.

Meet champion Muscatine entered the contest at seventh in the power rankings. Dowling, which finished a distant second, was the favorite.

“We had a good meet with some great individual swims, Cruise said.  “A couple of kids didn’t hold their positions, but we had some who dropped their times significantly. And we had some who dropped their times but still didn’t hold onto to their positions."

Senior Morgan Barnes had the Warriors' highest finish with a second in the 500 freestyle. Junior teammate Josh Hughes came in third. Barnes had won the district title.  Both of them recorded their lifetime best times at state.

The same pair finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 200 free after taking the top two spots at districts.

Warrior senior Ian Ford, who had claimed the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke in last week’s districts, finished third and fourth in the same events at Marshalltown.

Ford’s time in the 200 IM broke the Washington school record dating back to 1983.

Hughes, Barnes, Ford and freshman Jared Thorson closed the state meet on a high note by placing sixth in the 400 free relay.

After four stellar years at Washington, Barnes and Ford will swim next year for the University of South Dakota. The school has moved from Division II to Division I competition and is constructing a new acquatics complex.

“It’s been a great four years here at Wash,” Ford said Saturday. “I’m proud of our team and happy we went out with a good meet.

“We didn’t come away with the big trophy or banner, but everybody stepped up.”

Ford said the team had set a goal to finish in the top five and came close.

“Everybody did their best,” Barnes said. “That’s not you can ask for. And we did well.”

Cruise said the Warriors were hindered this year by having only eight meet qualifiers, while other teams that finished higher had as many as 13.

Cruise also said many of the Warriors tapered for last week's district meet in order for the school to claim its 49th straight district title.  Other schools that faced lesser competition at districts were able to peak at the state meet.

“But,” said Cruise, “you can’t score points here if you’re sitting at home. So that’s the trade-off in winning the district.

“Overall, though, we had a good day today. Our swimmers competed with a lot of heart and a lot of pride.”

Jefferson senior Kristian Anderson finished eighth in the 100 butterfly, earning the J-Hawks five points. Jefferson tied for 19th place.

Kennedy's 200 free relay of Harrison Moore, Brandon Holmes, Chandler Heisler and Dylan Casey finished 11th in the 200 free relay for four [points. The Cougars tied for 21st place.

Linn-Mar did not score.

Muscatine took first place in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay, and the Muskies' Trent Jackson won the 200 and 500 freestyle events. He earned All-American consideration in the 200. He also swam on the 200 free relay. Travis Greenwald also claimed first place in the 100 breaststroke and earned All-American consideration. He also swam on the 200 medley and 200 free relays that earned All-American consideration.

Clinton's Matt Boyd and Dowling's Jonathan Fiepke also claimed two individual titles. Boyd won the 200 individual medley and 100 back, earning All-American consideration in both events. Fiepke won the 50 and 100 freestyle, and swam on the Maroons' championship 400 free relay. He earned All-American consideration in all three events.
