Paige needs surgery for foot injury

Linn-Mar High School All-American Marcus Paige is scheduled for a medical procedure next week to treat a stress fracture in his left foot, Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson confirmed Wednesday.

Paige will have a pin or screw inserted into his foot to promote healing. The procedure is scheduled for Tuesday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, according to Robertson.

"It sounds like it's a simple procedure," said Robertson.

Robertson thinks the recovery time will be approximately six weeks. Paige will be a freshman at North Carolina next season and plans to move to Chapel Hill, N.C., this June.

"He should be fine by then," the Linn-Mar coach said.

Paige was supposed to play for a United States all-star team in a basketball event in Oregon this weekend. He's made the trip to Oregon, but will not play in the game.

Paige has withdrawn from the Jordan Brand Classic all-star game that is scheduled for April 14 in Charlotte, N.C.

Robertson said Paige has informed North Carolina Coach Roy Williams of the injury. Williams encouraged Paige to have the procedure as soon as possible.

Paige played in the McDonald's All American Game in Chicago last Wednesday. He said after the game that his foot had been bothering him during the week in Chicago, but attributed the problem to new shoes all the players had been given for the game.

"It really bothered him as the week went on," said Robertson.

Robertson attended the game in Chicago and noticed that Paige did not appear to be moving normally, especially back-pedalling on defense. Paige had an X-ray after he returned from Chicago and was diagnosed with the stress fracture.

"I don't think he really knows when it happened," said Robertson.

Paige averaged 28 points this season and led Linn-Mar to the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament.
