IOWA CITY - Rachel Perry is a distance runner with the speed of a 400 meter runner, or maybe she's a 400 meter runner with the endurance to run great distances.

Or maybe she's both.

"I don't know," she said with a smile Thursday. "I think I might do better at distances, but the 400 is my favorite."

Perry is only a sophomore at Linn-Mar High School, so she has time to figure it out.

Perry won the 400 meter dash at the Class 4A state qualifying meet in Iowa City Thursday and anchored Linn-Mar's 4x400 relay to victory for a pair of gold medals.

Last fall, she was Linn-Mar's top finisher at the Class 4A state cross country meet when the Lions grabbed second place in the team standings.

She's young, she's versatile and she's talented.

"I have a lot of improving to do, but I think I've had a pretty good season so far," said Perry, who has the third-fastest time in the 400 in Class 4A this spring. "I don't know. I guess we'll see what happens."

The top two finishers in each event Thursday automatically qualified for the state meet in Des Moines next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In addition, 12 at-large berths will be awarded from around the state to make 24 qualifiers in each event.

The Iowa City schools dominated the meet at Iowa City West. The Little Hawks from City High finished first with 184.5 points and the Women of Troy from Iowa City West placed second with 164.5.

Kennedy placed third, Linn-Mar finished fourth, Prairie was fifth and Xavier finished sixth in the eight-team field.

Kennedy Japenga, Audra Schminke and Courtney Major joined Perry on Linn-Mar's triumphant 4x400 relay in 4:02.25. Perry captured the open 400 in 58.32, not far behind her season-best of 57.89 seconds.

Leslie Harder of Prairie won the high jump by clearing 5-foot-1. Sara Strauel of Linn-Mar also jumped 5-1, but placed second with more misses.

Molly Breitbach of Xavier claimed the 100 meter dash in 12.60 seconds.

Kathia Wampole of Kennedy won the 800 meter run in 2:20.61.
