Bender tabbed for IHSAA Hall of Fame

Former Marion High School football star Carey Bender will be inducted into the IHSAA Hall of Fame on Nov. 16 during the Class 4A football playoffs in Cedar Falls.

Bender rushed for 1,748 yards and scored 28 touchdowns as a senior at Marion in 1989 and ran for 296 yards in a single game.

He became an NCAA Division III All-American at Coe College, where he set 18 NCAA D-3 records and seven all-division records. He accumulated 7,970 all-purpose yards at Coe and scored 528 points during his career.

Bender carried the ball 967 times for 6,271 yards and 71 touchdowns with the Kohawks, caught 118 passes for 1,787 yards and 16 touchdowns, and completed 18 passes (10 for touchdowns). He scored eight touchdowns in a game against Beloit.

Bender's uniform No. 24 has been retired at Marion High School and his uniform No. 1 has been retired at Coe. He is a member of the Hall of Fame at both schools.

Bender, 40, appeared in one game for the Buffalo Bills in 1996.

The other new members of the IHSAA Hall of Fame are Chris Coffman of Sigourney-Keota (1992), Jared DeVries of Aplington-Parkersburg (1994), Justin Hartwig of West Des Moines Valley (1997), Jason Olejniczak of Decorah (1989) and Rollie Wiebers of Denison (1975).
