Prairie wins 7-on-7 camp at Notre Dame

The Cedar Rapids Prairie football is accustomed to playing games on high school fields in Iowa, but the Hawks had a special experience at the 7-on-7 passing camp at the University of Notre Dame this past weekend.

Prairie defeated a team from El Paso, 29-28, in the championship game of the tournament in the famed Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

The Hawks compiled a 9-1 record in the camp. The only loss was to El Paso, which they avenged in the finals.

There were 70 teams from 13 states. Prairie was the only team from Iowa and beat all the others.

"Our young men played really well and had a lot of fun," Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey reported.

The Hawks defeated teams from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Arizona and Texas. The semifinals also were played in Notre Dame Stadium.

The members of the Prairie football team who participated in the tournament were Jace Hanna, Demetrious Harper, Jarred Edmonds, Kentrel Smith, Jojo Simpson, Matt Jones, Casey Becker, Cam Rathje, Tristan Beyer, Alex Nelson, Mitch Dellamuth, Jesse Vizzini, Dylan Kuchemann, Mitch Christensen, Joe Landon, Luke Howes and Cam Frieden.
