Kennedy junior Derek Jacobus suffered a torn labrum in practice Thursday and will miss the entire 2012 football season, Coach Tim Lewis said Saturday.
Jacobus, who is right-handed, tore the labrum in his left shoulder while working as a receiver. "He just went up for a pass and landed on his shoulder," Lewis said.
Jacobus had been working as a receiver and quarterback in camp. He was competing with Riley Fergus and Joel Smetzer at quarterback.
"It's unfortunate," Lewis said. "He's a great kid, a great athlete."
Jacobus is a four-sport athlete at Kennedy. He hit .359 as the starting shortstop for the baseball team this year and also excelled in track, placing second in the long jump at the Drake Relays and taking fourth in the long jump at the Class 4A state meet. He also plays basketball.
There is no exact timetable for his return to athletics, but Lewis said he'll definitely miss the entire football season.
