Lions out-Dunn in 4th quarter

WATERLOO - The Linn-Mar Lions went into the final quarter of Friday night's football game at Memorial Stadium with a seven-point lead over Waterloo West.

They left Memorial Stadium with a 27-14 loss after giving up 20 unanswered points to Wahawks, who snapped a 15-game losing streak. Waterloo West (1-2, 1-0) had not won since Sept. 24, 2010, when it beat Waterloo East, 23-21.

Waterloo West junior Lance Dunn scored on runs of 23, 8, and 10 yards in the final 8 minutes to tilt things in favor of the Wahawks.

Dunn brought the Wahawks within 14-13 on a 23-yard run with 7:32 to play only to see the extra point missed after a penalty backed up the kick.

Clinging to the slim lead, the Lions ran three plays and were forced to punt it back to the Wahawks. A 24-yard return put the ball back deep into Lion territory.

Dunn found the end zone again from 8 yards out to give the Wahawks their first lead of the night, 21-14, with 2:57 left to play.

Linn-Mar turned the ball back over on downs to the Wahawks inside the Lions' red zone.

One play later, Dunn all but ended the game with a 10-yard scamper to stretch the margin to the largest of the night at 13 with 1:52 to play.

A long two minutes later the horn sounded and Linn-Mar dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division.

The first half saw little offense as the teams went back and forth but were unable to sustain any scoring drives.

Momentum seemed to go the Lions way when senior Zach Martins intercepted an errant pass to end a long Wahawk drive. Seven straight rushes later the Lions were the first on the scoreboard with a 14-yard touchdown run from senior Nick Trabucco.

Linn-Mar took that 7-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Waterloo West brought things back to even midway through the third with a 5-yard quarterback keeper for a score from junior Alex Young.

Linn-Mar quarterback Rhys Davis answered right back with a touchdown run of his own to give the Lions a 14-7 the lead going into the final 12 minutes.
