J-Hawks making winning play at Waypoint

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School football team lost its ballgame Friday night, but the J-Hawks were winners off the field Friday afternoon.

The J-Hawks presented a $350 check to the directors of Waypoint Services at the organization's headquarters in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Waypoint provides services for women and families in crisis due to homelessness, poverty, domestic violence or sexual assault. The organization also provides child care at the former YWCA building, 318 Fifth St. SE.

The J-Hawks raised the money by selling "Blue Cards" as part of their team fundraising project this year.

"We're not just about playing games and we're not just about the football team," said Jefferson senior Hunter Kloubec. "It's about helping the community and helping everybody else out."

Seventeen members of the team gathered for the presentation Friday. "This just makes my day. It really does," said Liz Hoskins, Waypoint's executive director.

Kloubec said the team's motto this year is "Built For Others," which emphasizes the team's concern for people in the community. He said Jefferson Coach Brian Webb suggested the team make a donation to Waypoint and the players took it from there.

"This seemed like a very good place to give the money," said Kloubec.

Jefferson snapped its 24-game losing streak with a victory against Dubuque Hempstead on Sept. 7. The J-Hawks lost to Iowa City High on Friday night, but the Waypoint organization considered them winners Friday afternoon.
