Cougars nipped for state golf title

POLK CITY - Cedar Rapids Kennedy finished a remarkable five-year performance at the state golf meet Saturday by placing second at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

Waukee edged the Cougars for the state title by one shot, 617-618.

Kennedy began the day with a one-shot lead over Waukee, 307-308, but the Cougars posted a 311 Saturday and Waukee came home with a 309 to claim the crown.

 

Kennedy has finished 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 4th and 2nd at the state tournament the last five years.

 

The Xavier Saints tied for eighth in the 12-team tournament at 645.

Kennedy grabbed the silver medal with a young team that featured four sophomores competing in the state tournament along with two seniors.

Sophomore Davis Sutton and senior Harrison Moore tied for sixth for the Cougars with 36-hole scores of 152. Sophomore Conner Koberg tied for 10th at 153.

Sophomore Cole Murdock finished at 163 to finish the scoring as Kennedy's No. 4 golfer. Senior Kyle Custer shot 164 and sophomore Ross Krekoff stood at 176.

Matt Junge and Jon Ingwersen, a pair of juniors, led Xavier at the Tournament Club of Iowa. Junge tied for 10th at 153 and Ingwersen finished at 155.

Senior Robbie Thinnes shot a 164 for Xavier, sophomore Jordan Even finished at 174, junior Ben Sagers also carded a 174 and senior John Drahozal posted a 179.

West Des Moines Valley, the No. 1 seed and defending champion, finished in seventh place at 637. Jeff Swegle of Valley, the 2011 champ, tied for sixth place at 152.

Ottumwa sophomore Matthew Walker claimed medalist honors at 1-under-par 141 with rounds of 69 and 72.
