Iowa City West won the final match by forfeit to escape Jefferson, 35-31, Thursday night in Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks flattened Waterloo East in their other meet.

West was ranked sixth in the Class 3A preseason poll by Predicament magazine. The Trojans held a 29-10 lead when the J-Hawks started to roll.

Jontel Ware and Kellly May recorded pins at 145 and 152, respectively, to start a five-match streak for Jefferson. Luke Sedlacek and Josh Allen both won by the score of 10-7 at 160 and 170, respectively, and the J-Hawks held a 31-29 lead after Drake Allen pulled out a 3-1 decision over Mitch Yoerger at 182.

But Jefferson did not have a wrestler to compete at 195 in the meet's final match and West escaped.

Kyle Briggs had a pin at 106 and Cody Hensel a major decision at 132 for the J-Hawks.

Jefferson received eight forfeits in its win over East. Hensel, Sedlacek and Dylan Pappas (138) had pins. Seth Jellison recorded a technical fall.
