Xavier volleyball coach Sullivan resigns

Barb Sullivan has resigned as the volleyball coach at Xavier High School, but she might like to return to coaching at some point.

Sullivan and her husband, Dave, are expecting their first child in January and she wants to spend as much time as possible with her baby girl. Dave Sullivan is an assistant coach in football and girls  basketball at Xavier, so both of them have been leading busy lives with teaching and coaching.

Barb Sullivan plans to take eight weeks of maternity leave before returning to Xavier as a teacher in the theology department. Sometime in the future, she'll consider returning as a coach.

"It's definitely a possibility," she said.

Sullivan compiled a 95-61 record in four years at Xavier with three trips to the state tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2012. The Saints reached the semifinals in 2010.

Xavier won the Valley Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference this year for the first division title in school history and Sullivan was named the Valley Division Coach of the Year.

"Barb did an excellent job leading the Xavier volleyball program," Xavier activities director Mike Winker said. "Her teams excelled on the court and she was an outstanding role model for our volleyball team members.

"I am saddened by her resignation but thankful that she will continue in her capacity as an educator at Xavier."
