Late free throw dooms Marion boys

Marion dropped a squeaker to Maquoketa at home Friday night, 48-47, in Wamac boys basketball.

Marion’s Daly Quinn hit a 3-pointer to tie the game late.

But with 3.2 seconds remaining Jeb Miller was fouled on a rebound and went to the line to shoot two for Maquoketa. He made the first and missed the second.

Marion rebounded and called timeout.  On an inbounds play, Marion’s Isaac Frazier was fouled with 0.8 seconds left on the clock and went to the line for a one-and-one.  He missed the front end and the game was history.

The game was decided on the free throw line.  Maquoketa was 14 of 29 while the Indians were 2 of 5.

“We had some foul issues,” said Marion Coach Mike Manderscheid.  “We put them on the free-throw line too many times.  We have to get better on the defensive end.”

Quinn connected on four 3-pointers and led a balanced Marion offense with 13 points.  Frazier and Tyler Gunderson each contributed 10.

“I was just trying to put us in a position to win the game,” said Quinn of his last minute three.  “We just came up a little short.”

Frazier was in foul trouble picking up two in the first half and two more in the third quarter.

“I am supposed to be a leader on this team and if I am not on the court it is not helpful for what we are trying to do,” said Frazier. “I need to stay out of foul trouble.”

Trent Bollman led all scorers for Maquoketa with 14 while Colton Fey added 10.

The game was supposed to be a matchup of big men with the Cardinal’s 6-foot-9 Spencer Bronson battling Marion’s 6-6 Andrew Davis. Bronson was out with appendicitis and Davis broke his leg during
the football season.

“It’s frustrating not getting to play,” said Davis.  “I just want to get out on the court with my teammates.”

Marion dropped to 0-2.

“We seemed to be a little impatient on offense and we just got outworked,” said Manderscheid. “We have to work harder at both ends of the court, but it’s only  November and we will get better.”
