Snappers continue hex on Kernels

BELOIT, Wis. - Pohlman Field has turned into a house of horrors for the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

The Kernels lost for the seventh time in eight games at Pohlman Field Wednesday night, 9-2, to the Beloit Snappers.

Beloit, which won the Midwest League Western Division first-half title by two games over the Kernels, moved into a tie with Cedar Rapids atop the second-half standings with its second win over the Kernels in as many nights - at Pohlman Field. Both teams are 11-2.

Chris Bostick's three-run home run in the first inning gave the Snappers all the runs they needed.

The Kernels scored a pair of runs in the third inning to pull within 3-2. The first scored on Jorge Polanco's fielder's choice grounder. Max Kepler singled home the second.

But that was it. Four Beloit pitchers combined to strikeout 15 Kernels. Eleven of the Kernels' final 12 outs were via strikeouts.

Beloit's John Wooten belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Bostick added an RBI double in the eighth.

Chris Powell (2-2) started and allowed 10 hits and six runs in 5.2 innings and took the loss.

Dakota Bacus (8-2) worked the first five innings and picked up the win for Beloit.

The Kernels host Wisconsin on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. First pitch is 5:05 p.m. The Kernels will be wearing special jerseys to honor the country's armed forces and there will be a post-game fireworks show.
