Berutti wins Metro Spotlight award

Xavier senior Carly Berutti is the winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Berutti captured first place at the AIM Grand National Trapshooting Championships in the Junior Female Division Aug. 6 in Sparta, Ill. She hit 100 straight targets on the final day of competition and finished 197 of 200 overall.

Berutti won the Iowa state title in June and was named captain of the all-tournament team. She is a member of the National Honor Society at Xavier and holds a black belt in karate.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Berutti:

MSR: What is your favorite highlight in sports?

CARLY: Winning best female for juniors at the AIM Grand National Championships in Sparta, Ill.

MSR: Who has made the greatest impact on your trapshooting career?

CARLY: All my coaches, which include my high school coaches Gene Parker and R.G. Prucha. Also my AIM coach Bob Doerres. And ultimately my dad, Joe Berutti.

MSR: What are your favorite subjects in school?

CARLY: My favorite subject is science. In college I hope to pursue a degree in environmental science and a career with the Department of Natural Resources.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

CARLY: My future goals include shooting in college at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. I'd like to be sponsored by a sporting company and one day to shoot for Team USA.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

CARLY: My favorite community service project was the ARC. The ARC provides services to families and clients with cognitive disabilities.
