Solon smothers Marion, 42-0

SOLON - The Marion Indians headed right for the buses after the handshakes on Friday.

They had seen enough of Spartan Field.

No. 8 Solon limited Marion to just 30 total yards in a 42-0 victory Friday in a Class 3A, District 6 showdown.

"We're not stepping forward and we're not physical on the offensive line," Marion Coach Tony Perkins said. "They were more physical than we were."

Solon (6-1, 4-0) limited the Indians to seven first downs. Marion had minus-11 yards at the half, and finished with those 30 total yards.

"They did a good job shutting down our run, same thing the pass," Marion senior quarterback Trevor Hardman said. "They out-physicaled us and we couldn't answer."

The Indians were missing nine starters, according to Perkins.

"We've lost three tailbacks, two 2-backs, and four offensive linemen the last three weeks," he said. "That makes it awful difficult. We've got kids who've never played a game before."

Big sophomore tailback Kory Walsh was a bright spot, running hard between the tackles for the Indians. But the sophomore had to overcome a bad start and  finished with just 30 yards on 14 carries.

"Coming up as a sophomore is always hard," Hardman said. "Its hard when you don't have everyone there. It is what it is."

Marion (3-4, 2-2) had 12 plays that resulted in negative yardage as the Spartan defense bled through the line of scrimmage.

"We've just really put a premium on being more physical," Solon Coach Kevin Miller said. "We know if we want to get to the places we want to be, we've got to be more physical."

The Solon defense only gave up one play of over 10 yards all night -- a 15-yard pass completion from Hardman to Logan Fuller in the fourth quarter.

"We had 11 hats to the football," Miller said. "That's what you've got to do when you're playing championship-style defense."

Solon has its eye on a district title, and plays for it next Friday at Maquoketa. Marion finishes with a trip to Clear Creek Amana (3-4) and then hosting Central DeWitt.

A playoff spot is still within reach.

"We'll just come back and keep working hard," Hardman said. "We really thought we could've had this one.

"This isn't the way we wanted our senior year to go. Its been a rough year."

Marion played okay defensively early, helped by some Solon penalties. But once the Spartans got back to doing what they do best, Solon rolled up 303 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Jacob Black had 134 rushing yards and two touchdown runs. He also was just 2-for-8 passing, but each completion was a long scoring pass.

Brandon Kramer added 113 rushing yards and Jordan Wymer had 53 yards and two rushing touchdowns for Solon.

"Its one of those years," Perkins said. "People have to step forward when there is an opportunity.

"We just have to play better."
