Meier wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Madi Meier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award this week for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Meier helped the Kennedy volleyball team compile a 20-15 record this season and reach the Class 5A regional finals. She finished second in the Mississippi Valley Conference in digs with 491 and finished seventh overall in Class 5A.

Meier also starts for the Kennedy basketball team and averaged 10.3 points and 5.2 rebounds last season.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Madi Meier:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

MADI: My favorite individual highlight in sports was being able to play with my younger sister, Kendal, this past volleyball season. She was also a DS, which allowed us the opportunity to play next to each other in the back row. I have two sisters and I consider them both my best friends. I am blessed that Coach Goodall gave my sister and I this opportunity. It will always be a memory of mine.

MSR: What is your favorite team highlight in sports?

MADI: My favorite team highlight in sports was getting to be part of two state volleyball tournaments my freshman and sophomore year, as well as beating all three Cedar Rapids teams (Washington, Jefferson and Xavier) in five games.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

MADI: As for the future, I had volleyball and basketball offers but I made the decision to attend Upper Iowa University to be a Peacock and play basketball with my older sister Olivia.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

MADI: My parents have had the biggest influence on my sports career, especially my father. He has been my basketball coach ever since I was in third grade. Whether it's been volleyball or basketball, my parents have always been there to support me and I couldn't thank them enough for that.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

MADI: My favorite classes in school would have to be math and science. I have always enjoyed these classes. In the future, I would like to teach one of these subjects in the secondary level and hopefully have the opportunity to coach basketball or volleyball.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

MADI: I have always enjoyed participating in the Breast Cancer Walk with the volleyball team and buying Christmas presents for those in need during  the holiday season. Our basketball team would "adopt" a family and buy them Christmas gifts. It is nice to give to those who are appreciative.
