Cline wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Bryan Cline is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Cline began the season with the Washington bowling team Tuesday by rolling an impressive two-game series of 258 and 259 for a 517 series, the best series by a Metro bowler last week.

The Warriors defeated Iowa City High School in that meet, 2939-2680, at Lancer Lanes.

Cline finished second at the Class 2A state meet last season as a sophomore with a 503 series, with games of 224 and 279. He helped the Warriors place third in the team standings.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Bryan Cline:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

BRYAN: One of my favorite moments in bowling came in 2012 at the Iowa Youth State Bowling Tournament held at Totem Bowl in Marshalltown. In the singles event, I struck out the 10th frame of the third game which gave me a series (three game total) of 700 exactly. Not only was this my first 700 series, but it was high enough to hold out and give me a State Championship within my division.

MSR: What has been your favorite team highlight in sports?

BRYAN: A favorite team highlight would be our high school team's comeback last year at the regional meet. Our combined scores did not put us in a great position after the first round, and our first baker's game was quite rough. We then found something as a team, came alive and won our regional by a significant quantity. This sent us to the state tournament where we finished third as a team.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

BRYAN: In bowling, I have been truly influenced by three people: Sue Strausburger, Andy Diercks and Melissa Sobolik. Sue was my first true coach that helped instill a great love for the game and increased my skill level with great alacrity. She is the reason for my continued interest in the sport.

Andy Diercks is my current go-to coach and also the first to suggest I become a certified coach. His wisdom has increased my skill dramatically and gave me the spark to become a more technical player and coach. Melissa Sobolik is a former member of the Wichita State University Women's Selected Bowling Team and was a great inspiration to me as a collegiate bowler and is now helping me prepare for my attempt to join the men's team at Wichita State.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

BRYAN: My current long-term goal is to be accepted to the Wichita State University Men's Selected Bowling Team.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

BRYAN: My favorite classes in high school are often science or math classes. AP Politics and Government: US (freshman year) and AP Physics B (currently enrolled) have been my favorite core academic classes I have taken.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

BRYAN: I am a Bronze Level USBC Bowling coach (achieved in March on 16th birthday; must be 16 to achieve Bronze; and certified Level 1 in 2010 at age 13). For three years, I have coached a league of beginning bowlers at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center as a volunteer. This is one of my favorite parts of every week - helping new bowlers improve and come to enjoy the game I love so dearly.
