Lindwall wins Metro Spotlight Award

Frank Lindwall of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday night.

Lindwall, entering his junior year at Washington, has already established himself as one of the top high school golfers in Iowa. He had an 18-hole average of 71.88 strokes last year as a sophomore, which was the second-best average in the state.

Lindwall made a strong showing at the U.S. Junior Amateur championships last month at the Colleton River Plantation Club in Bluffton, S.C. He shot rounds of 77 and 73 for a 36-hole total of 6-over-par 150 in an international field of elite golfers.

Lindwall finished in a multiple tie for 60th place in the preliminary rounds, but he lost a tiebreaker and did not qualify for the match play competition for the final 64 golfers.

Lindwall averaged 79.2 shots as a freshman at Washington in 2013 and reduced his score by more than seven strokes last year.

The 2015 fall campaign will begin on Thursday, Aug. 13 with the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet at Jones Park.
