Snitker wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington quarterback Reid Snitker is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Snitker threw two touchdown passes in the final 61 seconds last Thursday night as the Warriors rallied from a 27-15 deficit to stun Waterloo West, 28-27, at Kingston Stadium.

Snitker, a junior, completed 22 of 31 passes for 222 yards. Both of his TD passes were to Isaiah Nimmers, including the game-winner with 15.5 seconds remaining.

Jenn Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar freshman Jennifer Jenks is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks has burst onto the scene this year as one of the top swimmers in the state. She ranks No.1 in the 50-yard freestyle, No.1 in the 100-yard freestyle and No.2 in the 200-yard freestyle.

Jenks broke four records Tuesday during a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Jefferson. She snapped pool records in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle that had stood for more than 20 years, and she broke the Linn-Mar school records in those events as well.

Nelson wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier senior Matt Nelson has been selected as this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Nelson, who stands 6-foot-8, 250 pounds, is an all-state defensive end and tight end for the top-ranked Xavier football team. The Saints are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents, 140-7, with three straight shutouts.

Nelson has made 10 tackles this season, with three tackles-for-loss and two sacks for a defensive unit that does not spend much time on the field. The stingy Saints have allowed only 93 yards per game and have collected three straight shutouts. He has caught four passes for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Cannoy wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion High School senior Quinn Cannoy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Cannoy caught three touchdown passes Friday night as the Indians defeated Anamosa, 58-0, on the road. They were the first three TDs of the game and helped Marion get off to a fast start.

Cannoy is a four-sport athlete for the Indians. He also participates in basketball, track and baseball.

Gorman wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Shannon Gorman is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Gorman was the top Metro finisher at the Cedar Rapids Invitational cross country meet last Thursday when she placed fifth overall at Noelridge Park.

Gorman has been one of the top distance runners in the Metro area for several years. She placed seventh in the 3000 meter run at the 2013 Drake Relays, finished 14th in the 1500 meter run at the 2013 state track meet, placed 15th in the 3000 at state and qualified for the state cross country meet last fall.
