Prairie grapplers win Independence title

INDEPENDENCE - Cedar Rapids Prairie crowned three champions and captured top honors at the Independence wrestling tournament Saturday.

Marcus England, Sam Uthoff and Taylor Mehmen came home with titles for the Hawks.

England pinned Kyle Prewitt of Christian Brothers College in 1:46 for the crown at 113 pounds. Uthoff pinned Chase Lienhard of Crestwood in 3:20 for the championship at 132 pounds. Mehmen trimmed Matt McMillan of Independence, 9-7, in overtime for the title at 195.

Clint Lembeck of Xavier won the 138-pound title with a 10-4 victory over Drew Davis of Independence in the finals.

Johnny Clymer of Linn-Mar won the 145-pound crown with a 4-3 victory over Josh Gerke of Xavier.

Prairie claimed the team championship with 223.5 points. Crestwood finished second with 159 points. Linn-Mar placed sixth and Xavier finished seventh out of 12 squads.

Linn-Mar wrestlers fall at Hempstead

DUBUQUE - Alex Streicher and Shea Hartzler collected pins for the Linn-Mar Lions on Thursday night in a 51-19 loss to Dubuque Hempstead in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet in Dubuque.

Streicher pinned Mason Henning in 3:54. Hartzler stuck Kent Kragenbrink in 1:49.

Charlie Petersen won a 2-1 verdict for Linn-Mar and Johnny Clymer posted an 11-3 major decision.

Wempen will join Iowa wrestling

Linn-Mar senior Matt Wempen has accepted an offer to join the University of Iowa wrestling program, according to an article in Saturday's Gazette.

Wempen was a Class 4A state champion as a freshman in 2012 and a four-time place-winner. He finished third at the state meet this year.

Linn-Mar grapplers stick City High

IOWA CITY - Noah Ajram, Matt Wempen, Brayden Schultz, Tylor Newhouse and CJ Garnett had pins Thursday night as the Linn-Mar Lions rolled by Iowa City High, 47-22, in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet in Iowa City.

Wempen pinned his man in 37 seconds, Garnett flattened his opponent in 53 seconds, Newhouse stuck his guy in 57 seconds and Ajram needed only 63 seconds to collect his pin. Schultz worked for 5 minutes, 10 seconds to get his pin.
