Jefferson softball field named for Niemeyer

The Jefferson High School softball team will play all its home games on "Larry Niemeyer Field" in the future, it was announced Thursday.

Dr. Dave Benson, the superintendent of the Cedar Rapids school district, has approved a request by the Jefferson Booster Club to name the field in Niemeyer's honor.

"Having the Jefferson softball field named after me is truly an honor," Niemeyer remarked. "It is certainly one of the highlights of my career. It is hard to put into words how proud I am."

Prairie gets healthier against J-Hawks

Cedar Rapids Prairie guards Madison Dellamuth and Alisa Weiland are almost fully recovered from their injuries and feeling good again.

That could spell trouble for their opponents.

Dellamuth scored 16 points and Weiland played a steady game as the ninth-ranked Hawks defeated Jefferson, 61-50, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie Tuesday night.

J-Hawks clamp down on Clinton, 62-41

In their season debut at home Tuesday night, the Jefferson boys missed enough bunnies under the basket to shame even Elmer Fudd.

But they made up for it by hawking enough balls out of the Clinton River Kings’ hands to coast to an easy 62-41 win.

“We have to get better at finishing on offense,” said J-Hawk Coach Stu Ordman.

On the other hand, he pointed out, “I think our pressure on defense really bothered them.”

J-Hawks push No. 1 Rams before falling

Nobody can accuse Jason Edwards of ducking the best competition he can find.

In his first game as the new girls basketball coach at Jefferson High School, Edwards accepted the challenge of playing top-ranked Southeast Polk because he wanted to see where the J-Hawks stand in their development.

The J-Hawks measured up fairly well.

Jefferson gave Southeast Polk a good battle for more than three quarters Friday night before falling short, 74-47, in the season opener at Jefferson.

'Coach Eddie' Era opens at Jefferson

The new version of Jefferson girls basketball is sort of like children’s book characters Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel Mary Anne, who always dug faster and better the more people watched.

In their debut Friday night under first-year coach Jason Edwards, the J-Hawks seemed to hustle faster and better the more the coach chattered.

And since “Coach Eddie,” as the girls call him, keeps up constant banter from the bench, his team showed the same frenetic fast-paced tempo in the finale of the 10-team Jefferson Jamboree scrimmage.

“Alright, nice job,” Edwards chirped, time and time again.

Taylor Olson finds new home at Kirkwood

Taylor Olson thought about living at home this year while he played basketball at Kirkwood Community College, but then he had second thoughts.

"I was going to live at home, but everybody else was on campus so I decided to be with the team," he said Friday night.

It looks like he's quickly found a new home with the Eagles.

Olson started at point guard for Kirkwood in its scrimmage against Coe College at Johnson Hall Friday and looked especially sharp with his passing and ballhandling.
