Jefferson pins loss on Kennedy, 43-27

Kennedy dropped a Mississippi Valley Conference home wrestling meet Thursday night to crosstown rival Jefferson, 43-27.

There were nine pins with Jefferson scoring six of them. The J-Hawks got pins from Kyle Briggs, Kelly May, Luke Sedlacek, Josh Allen, Drake Allen and Dalton Kuehl. It was May’s 16th pin in 23 wins.

“I always wrestle for the pin,” said May. “I expect to get a pin every time I go out there.”

Kennedy boys trip Waterloo East, 52-41

WATERLOO - Patrick Martin scored 11 points and Benjamin Struss grabbed 12 rebounds as Kennedy defeated Waterloo East, 52-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball game in Waterloo.

Johnathon Koelling contributed eight points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (7-3, 5-2). Anthony Carter collected seven points and five assists.

Daeton Hoskins led Waterloo East (8-4, 4-4) with 15 points.

Kennedy girls clobber East, 72-3

Paige Hendrickson scored 15 points to lead a quartet of Kennedy scorers in double figures and the Cougars blasted Waterloo East, 72-3, Tuesday night in girls basketball.

Jordan Holmes added 13 points, Madison Meier 11 and Stephanie Botkin 10 for Kennedy (8-4, 5-2 Mississippi Valley Conference).

Kennedy led 27-0 after one quarter and 49-3 at halftime.

Heisler leads Cougars at Burlington

BURLINGTON - Chandler Heisler finished second in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 free to guide Kennedy to a sixth-place finish Saturday at the Grayhound Invitational boys swimming meet.

Heisler also swam on the third-place 200 free relay. Other members were Stefan Kitsos, John Richardson and Harrison Moore.

Kitsos and Richardson were joined by Dylan Casey and Andy Hanson on the fourth-place 200 medley relay team.

Muscatine won the meet with 331.5 points. Iowa City West was second with 233.

Kennedy rally stuns Senior girls

Kennedy outscored Dubuque Senior 21-2 in the fourth quarter and rallied to beat the Rams, 53-47, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game at Kennedy.

Stephanie Botkin led the Cougars with 15 points. Paige Hendrickson had 13 and Madison Meier 11.

Senior led 33-22 at halftime and 45-32 after three quarters.

Kennedy is 7-4 overall, 4-2 in the MVC.

Balanced Cougars roll past IC West

Kennedy used a balanced attack to roll over Iowa City West, 2703-2535, Thursday in boys bowling at Cedar Rapids Bowl.

Seth Nutt had high game of 206 for the Cougars. Doug Svoboda had high series with a 379.

The Cougars had four bowlers roll between 379 and 366 series.

Kennedy girls bowl over IC West

Amanda Wiedemeier and Jessi Schoettmer both had the line for the Kennedy girls bowlers Thursday against Iowa City West.

Wiedemeier rolled games of 203 and 186 for a 389 series, and Schoettmer had games of 161 and 205 for a 366. The Cougars bowled over West, 2445-2182.

Kennedy led by 168 pins after the first round.

Cougar matmen claw Warriors

Kennedy wrestlers had four pins and received four forfeits in a 51-28 win over Washington Thursday night at the Warrior gym.

Mason Jacobs (195), Zack Goodall (220), Nathan Waterhouse (126) and AJ Losch (138) had pins for the Cougars.

Losch also won by decision against Dubuque Wahlert. The Cougars were beaten by the Golden Eagles, 46-18.

Xavier girls stick it to Kennedy

With a lineup full of new players, wily Xavier girls basketball coach Tom Lilly is going back to some old ways that worked in the past.

“We learn from former players who come back and ask about some ins and outs we used to use,” Lilly said Tuesday night after his novice Saints patiently used an old-school inside/outside game to turn back the visitors from Kennedy, 60-51.

Since senior starting guard Kayla Armstrong is the only player on the roster who had extensive court time last year, Lilly runs fresh legs in and out like a traffic cop.

Koelling lifts Cougars by Saints, 44-41

Ryan Luehrsmann did not know a whole lot about Kennedy senior Johnathon Koelling prior to Tuesday night's basketball game at Kennedy.

He does now.

Koelling collected a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Cougars trimmed Xavier, 44-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference affair.

Koelling, a streaky 6-foot-4 forward, posted a career high in points and rebounds against the Saints despite not starting.
