Tony Vis accepted the offer to become Kennedy's new girls basketball coach last May before he knew Morgan Martin would be moving to town from Quincy, Ill.

Some guys are just lucky.

Fundraiser for Kennedy golfer Drew Wall

Barber's Etc. is hosting a benefit Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Hiawatha Community Center to raise funds for Drew Wall and his family.

Wall is a sophomore at Kennedy and has been a member of the boys golf team for the past two years despite battling cancer. He was an inspiration for the Cougar team that finished second at this year's state meet in October. The fundraiser is to help pay his medical bills.

The day's festivities include a cut-a-thon (all proceeds from haircuts at the community center will be donated), a silent auction, pancake breakfast and luncheon. The breakfast runs from 9 to 11 a.m., lunch is from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the silent auction is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The public is invited.

Hempstead holds off Kennedy spikers

MONTICELLO – Kennedy senior stars Lexi Rogers and Jordan Calef played out their hearts Tuesday night, trying to spike their team to a regional final upset of third ranked Dubuque Hempstead.

And gutsy fellow senior Bre Boote literally knocked herself out. Her Cougar career ended when she hit her head on the scorer’s table diving for a ball in the third game of a hard-fought match.

In the end, though, the big hitting Mustangs (29-6) simply overpowered ninth ranked Kennedy (24-13) in four games to advance to next week’s next state tournament at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

After dropping the first game 25-22, Hempstead reset itself and took the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 27-25.

Kennedy girls hurt by timing device at state X-C

The Kennedy girls cross country team was the innocent victim of modern technology Saturday at the state meet in Fort Dodge.

The Cougars were summoned to the clubhouse at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course and told they had finished third in the Class 4A standings and would be honored during the awards ceremony, only to be subsequently informed it was a mistake.

The Johnston Dragons actually finished third and the Cougars were fourth. The confusion was blamed on a problem with the electronic timing device.

The Kennedy girls had lined up and were ready to march onto the back porch of the clubhouse, receive their third-place trophy, acknowledge the fans and pose for pictures. When they learned the bad news, they unhappily left the scene.

Clock strikes midnight for Cinderella Cougars

CEDAR FALLS - Kennedy senior Alex Hillyer cried as the left the UNI-Dome floor late Monday night.

They were tears of sadness, but also tears of pride.

"I can't believe it's over," he said softly as he walked slowly toward the locker room, his right elbow raw and bloodied. "We made a good run."

Teammates put their arms around him as he left the field. Later, the Cedar Falls Tigers paid their respects, patting him on his shoulder pads as they passed by.

"Great game, man," one of the Tigers said. "Hell of a game," said another.

Hillyer carried the ball 29 for 118 yards, scored two touchdowns, intercepted a pass and made a slew of tackles for the Kennedy Cougars in their Class 4A playoff game against No. 8 Cedar Falls in the UNI-Dome, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Cedar Falls broke three long touchdown runs of 89, 80 and 78 yards and stopped the Cinderella Cougars, 35-15, in the second round of the playoffs.
