4 Metro golfers named all-state

Four Metro golfers have been named second team all-state by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association.

Harrison Moore and Conner Koberg of Kennedy were joined on the all-state squad by Matt Junge and Ben Sagers of Xavier.

All-state honors are based on the IHSGCA adjusted scoring averages. The top 10 golfers were named first team all-state and the next 10 were named second team all-state.

Cougars grab 3rd at MVC swim meet

Kennedy, Linn-Mar, Washington and Jefferson could have put an all-star team together Saturday and still not have won the Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet.

That's how strong the MVC is with some of the top teams and top individuals in the state.

The Cedar Falls Tigers, ranked No. 2 in the state, captured seven events Saturday and claimed the conference title with 436 points in the 12-team field.

Iowa City West, which is ranked No. 6, finished second with 388 markers.

The Kennedy Cougars, who are ranked No. 8, had to settle for third place behind Cedar Falls and Iowa City West with 290 points.

Resurgent Cougars blast Hempstead, 48-7

After struggling through losses in its first five games, Kennedy's football team pushed the reset button.

And now they've pushed to three straight wins.

Senior Alex Hillyer ran for 227 yards and four touchdowns and Kennedy blasted Dubuque Hempstead, 48-7, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division game at Kingston Stadium.

Senior Alex Boomershine also ran for two touchdowns for Kennedy (3-5, 3-2). The Cougars piled up 291 yards of rushing offense and the defense held Hempstead (0-8, 0-5) to 179 total yards.

Kennedy back in volleyball poll at No. 9

Kennedy burst back into the Class 5A volleyball rankings at No. 9 in the poll released Friday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Cougars (17-11) beat previously 10th-ranked Iowa City West on Tuesday. West dropped out of the poll.

Xavier, meanwhile, fell two spots to No. 9 in the Class 4A poll. The Saints are one spot ahead of Marion.

Kennedy girls claim MVC Mississippi title

Kennedy placed four runners in the top nine to win the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division girls cross country meet Thursday afternoon at Tuma soccer complex.

Alyssa Averhoff was Kennedy's top finisher in second place. Allison Culver finished fourth, Katie Wampole fifth and Lauren Meyer ninth. The Cougars' rounded out their scoring with a 15th place finish by Jessica Rodman.

Iowa City West's Ashlynn Yokom won the girls race in a time of 14 minutes, 16.39 seconds on the 4-kilometer course. Averhoff was 41 seconds behind her.

Kennedy tops IC West in volleyball

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy volleyball team defeated an old nemesis Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

The Cougars trimmed 10th-ranked Iowa City West in a five-set marathon for a small measure of revenge, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 16-25, 15-12.

Kennedy lost heartbreakers to Iowa City West in the semifinals of the state tournament in each of the last three years.

Kennedy swimmers trim Senior, 99-86

The Kennedy High School girls swim team used its superior depth to sink Dubuque Senior in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Kennedy Tuesday night, 99-86.

The Cougars won only three events and tied for first in another, but they collected seven second-place showings and 11 third-place finishes to nip the Rams.

Jessica Schmeiser won the 100 freestyle and swam on the triumphant 200 freestyle relay. Tori Spauling captured the diving for Kennedy and Michelle Wasta tied for first place in the 100 butterfly.

Hannah Botkin, Sam Jacobsen and Megan Berst joined Schmeiser on the 200 freestyle relay.

French enjoys life with No. 2 Ducks

Christian French doesn't have much of a night life at the University of Oregon, not with football practice usually looming the next morning with the second-ranked Ducks.

"I try to get to sleep in the 9:30 range and get at least eight hours of sleep," he said.

Unlike most colleges, the Ducks practice in the morning at 9 or 9:30 for a few hours. Then comes lunch, afternoon classes, homework, night-time football meetings and back to sleep at 9:30.

"Sometimes you want to stay up or think 'I want to catch this on TV' or something like that," he said, "but then you realize, if you do that one day, you're going to feel it the next morning. We do get our rest."

Cougars nipped for state golf title

POLK CITY - Cedar Rapids Kennedy finished a remarkable five-year performance at the state golf meet Saturday by placing second at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

Waukee edged the Cougars for the state title by one shot, 617-618.

Kennedy began the day with a one-shot lead over Waukee, 307-308, but the Cougars posted a 311 Saturday and Waukee came home with a 309 to claim the crown.

Kennedy has finished 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 4th and 2nd at the state tournament the last five years.

Cougars rally past Waterloo East, 38-30

WATERLOO - The 125 Kennedy fans who braved the frigid weather in Waterloo Friday night left Memorial Stadium with a warm feeling inside.

So did the Cougars.

Kennedy scored 17 straight points in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 38-30 victory in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.
