Reimer, Ollinger power Lions to sweep

CEDAR FALLS - Caleb Reimer drove in four runs in the opener and Brandt Ollinger had five RBIs in the nightcap to power Linn-Mar to a doubleheader sweep of Cedar Falls, 12-2 and 9-4, Monday in Mississippi Valley Conference baseball.

Reimer's three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning of the opener broke a 2-2 tie and sparked a six-run outburst by the Lions (13-10, 9-5). They tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning.

Ollinger singled home a run in the second inning, then had a bases-clearing double in the third inning of the nightcap.

McCullough's 1-hitter lifts Lions to split

After a crushing defeat in the opener, Linn-Mar was in need of a boost in the nightcap of its Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Iowa City High on Friday night.

They got that and more from the unlikeliest of sources.

Senior Nick McCullough, who battled injury problems as a junior and had never gone more than four innings in a varsity game, came through with the performance of his life. All he did was toss a complete game one-hitter, striking out six and walking one as the Lions topped the Little Hawks, 3-0, at Linn-Mar.

McCullough's outing helped pick up a Lion team that led much of the opener only to see City High push across a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 4-3 win.

Jefferson (18-5, 11-3) won the opener, 4-3.

Olson fired a two-hit, 12-strikeout shutout on Tuesday against then-No.4 Dubuque Senior. She fired a three-inning no-hitter Wednesday night against Waterloo West.

Jefferson banged out 10 hits in five innings to back Olson. Hannah Towns and Katelyn Holub had two hits apiece.

Xavier's Brown baffles Lions again

Zach Brown faced Linn-Mar in the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball tournament in May and twirled a no-hitter.

The Lions faced Brown again Wednesday at Xavier hoping for a little pay back.

But it was not to be.
