Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

Jenks claims 3000 at 104th Drake Relays

DES MOINES - Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks chatted amiably with some of her friends after topping them in the 3000 meter run Thursday at the 104th Annual Drake Relays, casually holding her championship banner after running the third-fastest time in meet history.

She didn't act like her performance was anything special, but it was.

Jenks captured the 3000 in 9 minutes, 46.02 seconds with a strong kick on the final lap to win her personal battle with Pleasant Valley freshman McKenzie Yanek by more than four seconds.

Linn-Mar's new fields ready for play

When it was first proposed, the goal for those involved in the planning and construction of the four-field Linn-Mar baseball/softball complex was simple.

“Everybody wanted to make sure it was done right,” said first-year Lions softball coach Mike Shipley. “It’s a tribute to the district, the superintendent (Katie Mulholland) and the school board that this facility has been done the right way.

"It will be the same type of showcase facility that we have with the new football stadium.”

Shipley, who was the longtime sophomore baseball coach before making the move to softball for this summer, and his baseball counterpart, Chad Lechner, can’t wait to officially start drills at the complex. Baseball practice begins on Monday with softball opening a week later on May 6.

Slight delay for new Linn-Mar pool

The baseball/softball complex isn’t the only new facility scheduled to open this year at Linn-Mar.

A $5 million aquatic center, located on the site of the old Linn-Mar baseball field, just east of the football stadium, is running about 30 days behind schedule.

“The pool is a little bit behind because of weather,” said Linn-Mar assistant superintendent Rick Ironside. “If weather turns around and they have a nice spring and summer we hope they will be able to catch up.”

Gingrich shoots Lions past No.4 Prairie boys

In a game they controlled the whole way, it took the Linn-Mar boys almost 60 minutes to finally put away Prairie, 2-1, Tuesday night on the frozen tundra of their home field.

The game winner came with 20:41 to go when junior midfielder Jason Gingrich smacked a line drive from the 10-yard line high into the far left side of the net.

“Jason (Webb) dropped the ball off. I took one touch and the ball dipped into the corner,” Gingrich explained after scoring his fourth goal of the season.
