Evans, Jenks capture major titles at ISU

AMES -- Josh Evans and Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar posted impressive victories at the Heartland Classic cross country meet on the Iowa State campus Saturday.

Evans, a junior at Linn-Mar, won the boys 5K race in 15:52, topping a field of 175 runners that included Ben Anderson, the defending state champion from West Des Moines Valley.

Jenks, just a freshman, captured the girls 4K race in 14:10, stamping her as one of the favorites for the state title this year. She topped a field of 179 contestants.

Evans finished ahead of Anderson in the Heartland Classic last year as well, but Anderson won the state title a month later and Evans was second. Now Evans has beaten Anderson again, perhaps setting the stage for another showdown at the state meet in October.

Evans beat Will Burke of Edina, Minn., by nine seconds Saturday. Anderson placed fourth in 16:06, a full 14 seconds behind Evans.

Jenks is a nationally ranked triathlete who jumped onto the state cross country scene this month by winning the Cedar Rapids Invitational. She also competes for the Linn-Mar swim team.

Wolter lifts Lions by Warriors in OT

Even kickers have to play in pain sometimes, but that's OK with Linn-Mar junior Austin Wolter.

Wolter got a second chance to be the hero in overtime Friday night and booted a 23-yard field goal to lift the Lions past Washington, 24-21, at Linn-Mar Stadium despite limping around before his big kick with a sore leg.

Wolter missed a 28-yarder on his first try in overtime, but the Warriors were called for running into the kicker and he got another shot. This time he nailed it and the Lions (1-3) celebrated their first victory of the season.

Justis resigns as Linn-Mar volleyball coach

Rob Justis resigned as the girls volleyball coach at Linn-Mar High School Tuesday after five seasons, citing "philosophical" differences with Linn-Mar administrators.

"I'm not sure if it's official, but I turned in my resignation for both volleyball and girls basketball today," he said Tuesday evening. "They've got my letter of resignation, anyway."

Justis has been the sophomore girls basketball coach at Linn-Mar.

Justis said he was placed on "administrative leave" from his volleyball job last Tuesday, in the middle of the season. "We were getting ready to leave for City High and I was told I wouldn't be going," he remarked.
