Linn-Mar wallops Clinton, 14-0

CLINTON - Austin Stroschein drove in five runs Wednesday night as the Linn-Mar Lions drubbed Clinton, 14-0, in five innings.

Stroschein went 2-for-2 and scored three runs. Kevin Bogert was 2-for-2 and scored twice for the Lions (7-6). Jacob Stolley went 2-for-3.

Keaton Blackford pitched four shutout innings for the victory and drove in two runs. Jack Strellner also had two RBIs.

Lions drop pair to Dubuque Senior

Dubuque Senior swept the Linn-Mar Lions in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday night at Linn-Mar, 9-7 and 11-2.

A.J. Medinger and Kristie Sommer socked two-run homers for the undefeated Rams (16-0, 10-0) in the opener.

Maddie Rizor collected a home run and double for the Lions in the opener. Kortlan Olinger and Maddy Ryan also hit round-trippers for Linn-Mar (6-8, 4-6) in Game 1.

Lions overcame tragedy for trip to state

A season that began in unimaginable tragedy for the girls on the Linn-Mar soccer team is ending with them back in the state tournament after a year’s absence.

They’ll open against undefeated and Class 3A top-ranked Ankeny Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.

For the 10th-ranked Lions, it will be a fresh start after two months of heartache.

Evans, Mees, Ophoff top all-Metro track

Josh Evans of Linn-Mar, Lukas Mees of Marion and Brandon Ophoff of Linn-Mar have been named to the 2012 all-Metro boys track team in two individual events.

Evans and Mees were honored in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Ophoff was cited in the 110 high hurdles and 400 low hurdles.

Scott Immerfall of Marion was named the Metro Coach of the Year.

Jordan Houdeshell of Linn-Mar was saluted in four wheelchair events.

Linn-Mar girls boot Waterloo East

Sarah Fathallah scored in the first minute of the game Wednesday night as Linn-Mar belted Waterloo East, 10-0, in a Class 3A regional semifinal at Linn-Mar.

The Lions will host Cedar Falls in the regional finals Monday at 6 p.m. for a berth in the state soccer tournament.

Olivia Garcia scored three goals for Linn-Mar and Kayla Kvach scored twice. Jensen Sevening, Malory Garman, Molly Brandt, Maddie Scheldrup and Fathallah scored once apiece.

Christina Swenson collected two assists for the Lions, including an assist on the quick goal by Fathallah. Brenna Duffey and Fathallah also had two assists. Maddie Saville, Caitlyn Swenson, Erica Noyes and Garman had one assist.
