Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Arrington leads Warriors past J-Hawks, 56-41

With up-and-coming junior jumping jack Maurice Arrington playing his second great game in a row, the Washington boys rolled over Jefferson 56-41 Friday night in the J-Hawk gym.

The long-limbed 6-foot-6 first-year starter, who scored 17 two weeks ago in a loss to Kennedy, had a career-high 19 points on a variety of slick inside moves and even one 3-pointer.

“He's consistently getting better and better,” Warrior Coach Adam Sanchez said of the athletic stringbean. “He's starting to understand how he can become a really good player.”

'Best friends' spark Warriors to win

You might call them the Ying and Yang of Washington Warrior basketball. Danielle Franklin and Aleena Hobbs seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly. Or something like that.

Friday night at the J-Hawk gym the long-time best friends combined for 51 points in a hard-fought 67-59 Warrior win over the up-and-coming Jefferson J-Hawks in Mississippi Valley Conference girls play.

No. 10 Washington moves to 6-2 overall and Jefferson drops to 3-6.

Hobbs, a drive-to-the-basket-slashing forward, had 23 points and eight rebounds. Franklin, a silky-smooth shooter, had 28 points and seven rebounds, despite getting into early foul trouble.

Washpun finds new home at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Ben Jacobson loves what Wes Washpun has added to the University of Northern Iowa basketball team this season, both on the court and off the court.

Both parts have been important.

"I'll start with maybe the non-basketball stuff. His enthusiasm, his competitiveness," the UNI coach said Saturday night after the Panthers beat Iona, 90-78, in the McLeod Center.

"Most of the time he's got a smile on his face. When he doesn't," Jacobson said, smiling himself and chuckling, "it's because he's usually arguing with one of his teammates."
