Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Deutmeyer's senior moments lead Saints

IOWA CITY - Xavier senior Hayley Deutmeyer eats junk defenses for breakfast and freshmen defenders for lunch.

Deutmeyer scored 20 points and helped rally Class 4A No. 4 Xavier to a 49-46 win over Iowa City West Friday in Iowa City.

"We found Deutmeyer in a mismatch," Xavier Coach Tom Lilly said. "They tried to play a little face-guard junk defense with their freshman (Regan Steigleder). We recognized it.

"A senior should be able to take advantage of a height mismatch, as well as a senior versus a freshman."

"We did a poor job of handling their pressure," Xavier Coach Ryan Luehrsmann said. "We talked about it. We tried to simulate it in practice ... But it was as good as advertised. And turnovers killed us."

No.2 Saints survive J-Hawks, 62-61

Morgan Breitbach has some pretty good basketball bloodlines. And she’s a pretty good player in her own right. It showed Tuesday night.

The junior Xavier point guard made key plays and led her No.2-ranked 4A team to a gritty 62-61 come-from-behind Mississippi Valley Conference win at the Jefferson J-Hawk gym.

The Saints moved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the MVC, while Jefferson dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Breitbach scored 12 points and had four assists, including a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left that sealed the win.
