Saints, Indians hold spots in rankings

The Xavier Saints remained in the No.7 spot and the Marion Indians held firm in the No.10 position in the latest Class 4A volleyball rankings, the IGHSAU announced Thursday.

Bettendorf is ranked No.1 in Class 5A. There are no Metro schools in the 5A rankings.

Harlan is ranked No.1 in Class 4A, Carroll Kuemper is No.1 in Class 3A, Dike-New Hartford is No.1 in Class 2A and Holy Trinity is No.1 in Class 1A.

Sagers sparks Xavier in golf

Ben Sagers fired an even-par 35 Thursday to help the Xavier Saints win a Mississippi Valley Conference triangular meet at St. Andrews Golf Course.

Xavier shot 155, Prairie 160 and Iowa City High 181.

Cooper Reittinger of Prairie finished second with a 4-over 39.

Saints escape upset bid by Warriors

Even after dropping its second straight five-set match in a week, it was hard Tuesday night for Washington Coach Amy Faulkner to feel like it was a loss.

For one thing, her scrappy Warrior girls played highly ranked Xavier (No.7 in Class 4A) pretty much even-up right to the end on the Saints' home court.

“I can finally breathe now,” acknowledged Xavier Coach Krista Johnson afterward.

Junge, Sagers pace Saints to 3-peat

Ben Sagers clapped the loudest Monday when Xavier teammate Matt Junge was introduced as the MVC Valley Division Athlete of the Year for men's golf.

That's only fair, because last year Junge led the cheers when Sagers won the same award.

The Saints, blessed with back-to-back Athletes of the Year, captured their third straight MVC divisional title Monday with another solid round at Gardner Golf Course.

"We couldn't have written a script any better today," said delighted Xavier Coach Tim O'Brien, who was honored as the Valley Division Coach of the Year.

Saints stay No.1 in Register poll

The Xavier Saints remained the No.1 team in the Class 4A football rankings Sunday by the Des Moines Register.

The Saints (5-0) blanked Kennedy, 24-0, Friday night and held the Cougars to 76 yards of total offense and four first downs.

Dowling Catholic is ranked No.2 in Class 4A, followed by Pleasant Valley, Iowa City West and Ames. Iowa City High is seventh.
