Berutti wins national trapshooting title

Carly Berutti has turned her love of hunting and the outdoors into a national title.

Berutti captured first place at the AIM Grand National Trapshooting Championships in the Junior Female Division Tuesday with a flawless performance on the final day of competition in Sparta, Ill.

Berutti, 17, was tied for fourth place after Day 1 after hitting 97 of 100 targets, but she nailed 100 in a row Tuesday to win the crown with the best showing of her life.

Brown named baseball all-state

Five players from Metro area high schools have been named to the Class 4A all-state baseball teams, the Iowa Newspaper Association announced Tuesday.

Austin Stroschein of Linn-Mar, Brandt Ollinger of Linn-Mar and Ty Mougin of Prairie were named second team all-state by the INA.

Jimmy Roth of Linn-Mar and Zach Brown of Xavier were named third team all-state.

Drahozal, Galligan named softball all-state

Eight players from Metro area high schools have been named to the 2013 all-state softball teams, the Iowa Girls Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

Maddie Hansen, Alyssa Olson, Kaitlyn Davidson and Dani Stromert from Cedar Rapids Jefferson made the Class 5A all-state team.

Mallory Jones and Katie Kuch of Cedar Rapids Prairie also made the Class 5A all-state team.

Erin Drahozal and Sydney Galligan of Xavier were named to the Class 4A all-state team.

Saints frustrated at state tourney, 1-0

DES MOINES - Three failed bunt attempts. No clutch hits. Highway robbery in the outfield.

Man-oh-man-oh-man, it turned out to be a frustrating night for the Xavier Saints at the Class 4A state baseball tournament Wednesday at Principal Park in Des Moines.

The Saints left 11 runners on base and wasted an excellent pitching performance by Mitch Keller in a 1-0 loss to Sioux City East in the opening round.

Schemmel still going strong with Saints

Dave Schemmel turned 60 in June and admits he doesn't have as much zip on his fastball in batting practice anymore, but he still loves putting on the uniform and going to the ballpark with the Xavier Saints.

His next stop will be Principal Park in Des Moines, where the Saints (25-15) will face Sioux City East (30-9) in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Schemmel has compiled a 526-361 record in 26 years as the head coach at Xavier (15 years), Regis (10 years) and LaSalle (one year), making him a member of the exclusive 500 Win Club in state history.
