Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Saints dropping to 3A next year

The Xavier Saints will be moving down in baseball and boys basketball for the 2013-14 school year, which may help them move up in the postseason tournaments.

The Saints have dropped from No.48 in school population to No.52 for next year, which is significant in the world of Iowa high school athletics.

The top 48 schools compete in Class 4A in baseball and boys basketball, so the Saints will be dropping from Class 4A to Class 3A in those two sports according to preliminary enrollment figures compiled by the state.

Dorrington era begins for Xavier soccer

With a major milestone behind them, the Xavier girls soccer team began a fresh era Tuesday under a new coach but lots of veteran players.

First-year coach Bailey Dorrington, 24, is hardly a stranger to the program since she was an assistant last year and a four-year starter for the Saints before graduating in 2007.

In her freshman year, Xavier won its first state championship. Following a runner-up finish in 2005, it reeled off seven straight titles over the next seven years.

Xavier boys eye state soccer title

Cedar Rapids Xavier Coach Amir Hadzic always aims high with the Xavier High School boys soccer program.

The Saints won Class 2A state titles in 2010 and 2011, and Hadzic sees no reason why they cannot compete for another championship this year.

"We go into every year with certain goals, and one of our goals is to go to state and win it," he said after Xavier played in the Metro Jamboree at Kingston Stadium on Thursday.

"That's where playing in the rough-and-tough Mississippi Valley Conference helps a lot," he said. "You play those big teams and a grueling schedule, and when it comes to the state tournament you're always ready.

"I have a good feeling," he remarked.
