Krista Johnson new Xavier volleyball coach

Krista Johnson has been named volleyball coach at Xavier High School, athletics director Mike Winker announced Monday.

Johnson is an assistant coach at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. She has been at Northern State the last two seasons. Before that she was an assistant coach at Mount Mercy University from 2006 through 2010.

Johnson played college volleyball at the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated from there in 2002.

Johnson is a Cedar Rapids native and was a standout prep player for Jefferson.

Steingreaber wins 60 at ISU Classic

AMES - Xavier High School senior Nick Steingreaber captured the 60 meter dash at the 2013 Iowa State High School Boys Classic indoor track meet Tuesday night in 7.02 seconds.

Steingreaber nipped Brandon Norman of Iowa Falls-Alden by five-hundredths of a second in the 60.

Steingreaber also helped the Saints win the 4x100 relay in 44.81 seconds for a tight victory over Des Moines East, which placed second in 44.92. Miles Sullivan, Nick Stark and Trey Sampson ran the first three legs on the winning relay for Xavier.

Xavier girls 8th at state bowling

DES MOINES - The Xavier girls bowling team finished eighth Monday in the Class 1A state bowling tournament at Plaza Lanes.

Saints senior Tara Trcka was 19th in the individual competition, rolling a 356 series.

Dubuque Wahlert won the team title, giving the Golden Eagles a sweep of the boys and girls championships.

Caleb Miller wins state bowling title

DES MOINES - Xavier sophomore Caleb Miller fired a 279 his second game Monday that lifted him to a 492 total and the Class 1A state bowling title at Plaza Lanes.

Miller rolled a 213 in his first game, but went high in his second. He beat Dubuque Wahlert's AJ Gregory by 14 pins for the title.

Xavier's Kyle Elliott finished fourth with games of 246 and 216 for a 462 total.

The Saints finished second in the team race to Dubuque Wahlert. The Golden Eagles had a score of 3368, Xavier 3242.

Berutti named all-state in trapshooting

Xavier High School junior Carly Berutti has been named all-state by the Amateur Trapshooting Association.

Berutti was the subject of a Metro Sports Report profile in May of 2011.
