Kirkwood makes NJCAA volleyball tourney

IOWA FALLS - The Kirkwood Community College volleyball team earned a free trip to Toledo, Ohio on Saturday.

Toledo may not be the vacation capital of the world, but that's where the NJCAA Division II national tournament will be held Nov. 15-17.

The fourth-ranked Eagles defeated No. 10 DMACC, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, in the regional finals to reach the national tournament for the second time in three years.

Alexus Litts, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Cedar Rapids Kennedy, collected 43 assists in the regional finals and was named the Most Valuable Player on the all-tournament team.

Jacobs has big double-double for Eagles

WEST BURLINGTON - Kianna Jacobs scored 17 points and grabbed 18 rebounds Saturday as Kirkwood drubbed Lewis & Clark, 89-58, at the Southeastern Classic in West Burlington.

The 18 rebounds tied the fifth-most in school history.

"She was just invincible," Kirkwood assistant coach Joe Hruska reported.

The seventh-ranked Eagles led at halftime, 55-22.

No. 7 Kirkwood men open year Friday

The Kirkwood Eagles have a 6-foot-11 center from Nigeria who resembles former NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson at times with a left-handed baby hook near the basket.

Unfortunately for Kirkwood, Henry Uwadiae is academically ineligible this season and won't be able to play for the Eagles until next year.

It's doubly unfortunate, because 6-foot-8 sophomore center Matt Tiby won't play for Kirkwood in their first two games this weekend due to a violation of team rules. That leaves the Eagles a little shorthanded as they begin the new campaign.

No. 5 Kirkwood women look strong again

The women's basketball team at Kirkwood Community College has depth, talent, size, good shooters and an exceptionally successful head coach.

Good luck, opponents.

Coach Kim Muhl plans to put five experienced sophomores in the starting lineup when the fifth-ranked Eagles open the season Friday afternoon against Highland (Ill.) Community College at the Southeastern Classic in West Burlington.

Eagles eye spot in national tourney

The Kirkwood Community College volleyball team has compiled a 36-8 record this season despite a demanding schedule.

One more victory will send the fourth-ranked Eagles to the national tournament.

Kirkwood will face 10th-ranked DMACC in the regional finals at 2 p.m. Saturday in Iowa Falls, with the winner advancing to the national meet Nov. 15-17 in Toledo, Ohio.

Taylor Olson finds new home at Kirkwood

Taylor Olson thought about living at home this year while he played basketball at Kirkwood Community College, but then he had second thoughts.

"I was going to live at home, but everybody else was on campus so I decided to be with the team," he said Friday night.

It looks like he's quickly found a new home with the Eagles.

Olson started at point guard for Kirkwood in its scrimmage against Coe College at Johnson Hall Friday and looked especially sharp with his passing and ballhandling.
